[October 29, 2016]  SPRINGFIELD - Central Illinois residents can watch history unfold Saturday night with a World Series viewing party on the lawn of the Old State Capitol State Historic Site.

Bring lawn chairs or blankets, wear your favorite team’s cap or jersey, and watch the game in the open air. It’s the next best thing to being at Wrigley Field.

This free “History in the Making” event includes entertainment and games for the kids. (Bring a glove and play catch!) There will also be food and drinks for sale.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is working with local youth groups to ensure as many children as possible get to join in.

The game starts at 7:08 p.m., but visitors can claim their spot and start enjoying the fun as early as 5 p.m. Coolers and other containers are not allowed.

The audience will be on the south lawn with the historic Old State Capitol as the backdrop for a 15-by-20 screen. Games and other activities will take place on the north side.

The IHPA is grateful for assistance from Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs, city of Springfield, Downtown Springfield Inc. and Visit Springfield.

The Old State Capitol was the seat of Illinois government from 1839 to 1876. Abraham Lincoln served as a legislator there, launched his 1858 Senate campaign there with his famous “House Divided” speech, and used it as his unofficial campaign headquarters and presidential transition office.

The site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. IHPA protects the state’s historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. Its sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.
