[September 13, 2016]  DECATUR - Millikin Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten - The Millikin men's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 3-0 win at Fontbonne University in Clayton, Missouri on September 10.

Millikin opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Ben Spelman (Sligo, Ireland) scored off an assist from Tukunda Jakachira (Harare, Zimbabwe). The Big Blue went up 2-0 on a Tucker Mathieson (Decatur, Warrensburg Latham H.S.) goal from Gabriel Gill (Caracas, Venezuela).

The Big Blue scored its third goal one minute and 18 seconds into the second period on a goal from freshman Trey Knighton (Peoria, Notre Dame H.S.).

Millikin has shown a high power offense in the first three games scoring 15 goals. The Big Blue scored 29 goals in the entire 2016 season.

Fontbonne drops to 0-4-1.

Big Blue Women’s Soccer Earns Road Victory

The Millikin women’s soccer team scored a 2-0 win at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri on September 10. The Big Blue are now 2-1 on the season while Westminster goes to 1-2.

Millikin freshman Emily Ratchford (Saint Peters, Fort Zumwalt East H.S.) opened the scoring in the 40th minute from 10 yards out on an assist from Angela Pulice (Tinley Park, H.S.). In the second half, Meg Nowak (Indianapolis, Indiana, Guerin Catholic H.S.) put the Big Blue up by two on an assist from Emily Sanders (Ballwin, Missouri, Parkway South H.S.).

Kailyn Garza (Aurora, Colorado, Eagle Crest H.S.) earned the win in goal for Millikin playing the first half and recording two saves. Anna Benvenuto (West Allis, Wisconsin, PIUS XI H.S.) played the second half for the Big Blue with four saves.

Millikin Volleyball Goes 3-1 on the Weekend

The 22nd ranked Millikin volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday to finish 3-1 at the Pizza Hut Classic at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on September 9-10. The Big Blue improved to 6-2 on the season.

In Saturday’s first match, Millikin defeated Concordia University (Wis.) 3-2 (25-21, 14-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-9). Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Waukesha West H.S.) had 14 kills, 14 digs and three service aces for the Big Blue. Kelsey Talkington (North Aurora, Aurora Central Catholic H.S.) had eight kills and six blocks and Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.) added eight kills and three blocks. Cassidy Kingery (Heyworth, H.S.) had a team high 24 digs and Emily Mihalkanin (Willowbrook, Hinsdale South H.S.) had 28 set assists and two service aces.

In the second game the Big Blue defeated St. Scholastica 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-14, 25-19). Syversen again led the way with 19 kills and 13 digs. Emily Seegmiller (Arthur, Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond H.S.) added 11 and Goodey had 10. Kingery had 22 digs. Mihalkanin and Rose Syversen (Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Waukesha West H.S.) each had 25 set assists.

On Friday, the Big Blue won its first match over Lawrence University 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-14). Erin Syversen led Millikin with 13 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Kingery had team high 12 digs and Mihalkanin had 17 set assists and seven digs. Rose Syversen had 15 assists and three service aces.

Millikin lost the second match of the day to the host Wisconsin Oshkosh 3-2. Oshkosh won the opening set 25-16, but the Big Blue bounced back to win the next two 25-20 and 25-21. Oshkosh won the fourth set 25-20 and took the deciding fifth set 15-10. Oshkosh improves to 6-2 on the season. Erin Syversen was Millikin's kill leader in the second match with 17 along with 11 digs. Goodey and Cortney Bohn (Mahomet, Mahomet Seymour H.S.) each had nine kills. Goodey added three service aces and three blocks. Bohn had four blocks. Mihalkanin had 26 assists. Rose Syversen had two service aces and 14 assists.

Big Blue Football Drops Home Opener

The Millikin football team dropped its home opener to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 26-14 on September 10 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

Twelve penalties and four turnovers proved costly for Millikin. The Big Blue out gained Rose-Hulman 419 to 349, but gave the Engineers too many scoring opportunities. Millikin passed for 257 yards while rushing for 162. The Engineers rushed for 224 yards and gained 125 yards through the air.

Millikin opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 71 touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Nicco Stepina (Casey, Casey Westfield H.S.).

The Engineers answered with two first quarter scores of its own to lead 10-7 at the end of the first. The Engineers added to its lead in the second quarter on a safety from Nate Jackson and a two yard touchdown run by Kevin Dufauchard.

Millikin got back in the game in the third quarter on a 62 yard pass from Stepina to David Jackson (St. Louis, University H.S.).

Rose-Hulman closed out the scoring late in third quarter on a one yard run from Dufauchard.

Stepina was 15-36-1 passing for 257 yards and rushed for 83 yards. Jackson led the Millikin receivers with five catches for 133 yards.

Nikia Averitte (Indianapolis, Indiana, Lawrence Central H.S.) and Mykal Neal (Broadview, Nazareth Academy) led Millikin with 10 tackles each. Neal added an interception.

Millikin is off next weekend before traveling to North Central College on September 24 for a 6 p.m. game.

Millikin Cross Country Runs at University of Illinois-Springfield

The Millikin men's and women's cross country team ran its second meet of the year competing in the University of Illinois-Springfield's Second Annual First Meet Ever on September 9 in Springfield, Illinois. The Big Blue women were third while the men finished in fourth.

The Millikin women had two runners finish in the top 10 in the 4K race with Jamie Michl (Newton, H.S.) finishing in seventh in 16:01.61 and Sarah Bradley (Decatur, MacArthur H.S.) finishing in ninth in 16:04.22.

Senior Timee McElroy (Mt. Zion, H.S.) was the Millikin men's top runner finishing in 16th place with a time of 20:50.82.

Millikin Tennis Teams In Action

The Millikin men’s and women’s tennis teams were both in action last week. After having its match on Friday postponed due to weather, the Millikin women opened up CCIW play with a 9-0 loss to Augustana College. The women will be back in action tonight at Fontbonne University.

The Big Blue men opened its season with a 9-0 win at Westminster College on Sept. 11.
