Interstate crash near Lawndale takes life of Normal man Wednesday night

[September 16, 2016]  LINCOLN - From The Logan County Coroner’s Office:

The Logan County Coroner, Robert Thomas, has announced that Aaron M. Kolls, age 41, of Normal, IL, was pronounced dead at 11:16 pm on September 14, 2016 near the 135.5 mile marker of Interstate 55, near Lawndale Illinois.

Mr. Kolls’s death was due to a three vehicle collision in the north-bound lane, of the Interstate Highway. The crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Logan County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been performed.

At this time, the family has not made any final funeral arrangements.

VEHICLES: Unit 1: 2015 Jeep Cherokee
Unit 2: White 2014 Volvo semi with box trailer
Unit 3: Blue 2013 Freightliner semi with box trailer

DRIVERS:
Unit 1: 41 year old male of Normal, IL (Deceased)
Unit 2: Brandon W. Jackson, 30 year old male of Newport Jackson, AR
Unit 3: Jackie R. Krouse, 56 year old male of Springfield, IL

PASSENGERS: No passengers.

PRELIMINARY: According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, Unit 1 driver was traveling north bound. Unit 1 driver struck the guardrail and became disabled in the middle of the left and right lane of I55 NB at mile post 135. While Unit 1 was disabled in the lanes Unit 2 struck the rear of Unit 1 with the front left of Unit 2. Unit 1 was still disabled in the left lane when it was struck a second time by the front of Unit 3. It is unknown at this time which is the proximate cause of death of the driver of Unit 1.
Illinois State Police traffic crash reconstruction team is investigating the crash.

TRANSPORTS: Logan County Coroner removed the deceased from the scene.
Driver of Unit 3 was transported to Memorial Hospital in Springfield by Logan County Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Driver of Unit 3 was treated and released from the hospital.

SEATBELTS: During the preliminary investigation a seatbelt was not used by the driver of Unit 1. Driver of Unit 2 stated he was wearing his seatbelt and evidence shows Unit 3 driver was wearing his seatbelt.
