Qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich upset No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the $1 million Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday.

Top seed Garbine Muguruza was a straight-sets winner over Anastasija Sevastova, 6-3, 6-3, while No. 8 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was also unable to get out of the second round, falling 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Elina Svitolina. Qualifier Magda Linette needed two hours and 50 minutes to get past unseeded Yulia Putintseva 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

It was a shocking exit for Pliskova, who was coming off a strong run to the women's final at the U.S. Open earlier this month. The 107th-ranked Sasnovich had never defeated a player ranked in the top 30, but will now face Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals.

"I was expecting now to be going to Wuhan for the next tournament because I know Karolina is a really good player and I didn't expect to win today," Sasnovich said. "But you know, it's life and it's tennis, the ball is round!

"I have a lot of emotion. It was my first win over a Top 10 player, I'm really happy with it and looking forward to the next round."

GUANGZHOU OPEN

No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic needed 1:46 minutes to beat Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (4), 6-4 in quarterfinal action at the Guangzhou International Women's Open in China. The defending champion will next face Ana Konjuh, who beat American Jennifer Brady 6-4, 7-5.

The other semifinal will feature a pair of three-set winners Thursday with Lesia Tsurenko taking out fifth-seeded American Alison Riske 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 and Anett Kontaveit beating Viktorija Golubic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in 2:20.
