[September 27, 2016]  Sept 27 (The Sports Xchange) - Former Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy was arrested Sunday in Richardson, Texas, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

Hardy was stopped by Richardson police for a traffic violation and was arrested when 0.7 grams of cocaine were discovered in a wallet in the car, NBCDFW.com reported.

The officer who pulled over Hardy asked for permission to search the car and received it, according to the police report.

Hardy was released Monday afternoon from Richardson City Jail on $5,000 bond.

Hardy, 28, is a free agent after appearing in 12 games for the Cowboys last year and registering 35 tackles, six sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis informed the team Monday that he has retired from the NFL.

Davis, 26, drafted by the team in the 2010 draft, was a five-year starter for the 49ers before left football for a year and half, a hiatus the 49ers called a retirement in June 2015.

However, he played only seven games in 2014 because of injuries, including a concussion. Davis then left football for a year and half, a hiatus the 49ers called a retirement in June 2015.

Davis returned to the 49ers' training camp this summer, though he played in just one game this season and did not start.

"I just want my time and mind intact," Davis tweeted. "When you lose em both, you can't buy em back."

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Vernon Butler is expected to miss the next two to three weeks because of a high-ankle sprain, the NFL reported on its website.

Butler was injured during his team's 22-10 loss to Minnesota on Sunday and was wearing a cast on his right foot on Monday.

He is a member of the Panther's stingy defense and has one sack and three tackles thus far this season.

Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman La'el Collins has a torn ligament in his foot and is tentatively expected to miss 6-10 weeks, the NFL said on its website.

Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson avoided serious injury but might miss a game for the first time in his career with a sprained knee, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the day after Wilson limped to the sideline during a Week 3 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Carroll said on his Monday morning radio show that Wilson was diagnosed with a sprained MCL during an MRI exam. Carroll said it turned out "exceedingly well" after Wilson treated the injury overnight.

Vereen started Sunday with Rashad Jennings (hand) inactive and rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown.

The Detroit Lions waived linebacker Zaviar Gooden after he was promoted from the practice squad and played in Sunday's game.

Gooden recorded three tackles in the 34-27 loss against the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL and the American Football Coaches Association released a joint statement outlining new strategies to improve the scouting of underclassmen prospects who are considering making an early jump to the pros.

Until now, only seniors were allowed to be tested by NFL scouts before the beginning of each season. Beginning in February, each FBS team will be able to submit a list of five underclassmen who may join in the testing along with the seniors.
