[April 10, 2017]    April 8 (The Sports Xchange) - Houston Astros right-hander Collin McHugh will be shut down for the next six weeks after being diagnosed with a posterior impingement in his right elbow, the team announced on Saturday.

McHugh, 29, threw only one inning in a Triple-A rehab start Thursday before leaving the game because of elbow discomfort. He allowed three runs on three hits and walked a batter in a 27-pitch first inning.

"We expected him to go five innings," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Friday. "It certainly caused him to come home. It's unfortunate that he had a little setback. He didn't finish his outing, so we're certainly disappointed for him."

An MRI exam revealed no damage to McHugh's ulnar collateral ligament. He went 13-10 with a 4.34 ERA in 33 starts last season.

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price took another step in his recovery from a left elbow strain, throwing out to 120 feet.

Manager John Farrell described Price's rehab session as "another consistent work day" before the Red Sox faced the Tigers in Detroit.

The 31-year-old Price, who opened the season on the 10-day disabled list, has been throwing off flat ground over the last few weeks.

In 2016, Price posted a 17-9 record with a 3.99 ERA and 228 strikeouts over 230 innings in 35 starts -- his first year of a seven-year, $217 million contract with the Red Sox.

The San Francisco Giants and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. agreed to a minor league contract, according to reports.

Upton was released by the Toronto Blue Jays last Sunday after he hit .194 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 14 spring training games.

Upton, who was acquired by the Blue Jays in July from the San Diego Padres, hit a combined .238 with 20 homers, 61 RBIs and 27 steals in 149 games. He made 41 outfield starts for Toronto after the trade and hit .196 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 57 games.

Upton has 164 home runs and 586 RBIs in 12 major league seasons with a career batting average of .243. ))
