Lincoln Railsplitters split with SHG Cyclones on the baseball diamond

[April 20, 2017]  The Railsplitters faced Sacred Heart-Griffin this week and split with their Central State Eight Conference foes.

Tuesday in Springfield

On Tuesday in Springfield Austin Newton pitched a gem versus SHG as Lincoln shutout the Cyclones 2-0.

Newton (2-1) did not allow a single run and allowed just six hits. The pitching was strong on both sides, according to Lincoln Head Coach Mike Smania, as Newton fanned 10 SHG batters and issued only one walk.

Sam Raes pitched for SHG and he struck out eight Lincoln batters.

Cole Sheley and Colton Holliday each had RBIs for Lincoln. Andrew Yount had two hits for Lincoln.

The Railsplitters did not commit any errors in the field.

Following the win Coach Smania said, “I think the team played really well and did everything the right way to get the win. Newton had another outstanding outing and the team backed him up.”

Freshman Noah Funk made a leaping catch at second base to rob a hit from SHG

On Wednesday Lincoln hosted SHG and the Cyclones bats were pounding out hits early. The big blow came in the second inning as Michael Healey hit a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field. SHG had a 7-0 lead at the end of four innings.

SHG won the ballgame 10-0 in five innings.

Austin Chapman earned the win for the Cyclones. He struck out ten Lincoln batters. Isaac Lewis was the starting pitcher for Lincoln, with Preston Ebelherr relieving him after three innings of work.

Colton Holliday had a hit for Lincoln.
