[August 07, 2017]  Aug 6 (The Sports Xchange) - The Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star first baseman Yonder Alonso from the Oakland Athletics on Sunday in exchange for minor league outfielder Boog Powell.

The 2017 American League All-Star has set career highs in home runs, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS

Powell, 24, hit .194 (7-for-36) with two RBIs in 23 games over three stints with Seattle this season as he made his major league debut. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Tacoma, batting .340 with six home runs and 33 RBIs in 58 games.

The Kansas City Royals placed All-Star catcher Salvador Perez on the 10-day disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle on the right side of his chest.

An MRI exam revealed the injury after Perez left Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners after six innings. The move was retroactive to Saturday.

Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters the "worst-case scenario was four weeks" for Perez being out but hopes it will be more like 10 to 14 days.

The New York Yankees placed designated hitter Matt Holliday on the 10-day disabled list with a left lumbar strain.

It is the second time this season the 37-year-old Holliday has been put on the DL. The move is retroactive to Saturday.

Holliday was first sidelined on June 28 with a viral infection. Since his return after the All-Star break, he is just 11-for-81 (.136) with one home run and two doubles.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi would not describe it as a benching, but he sat catcher Gary Sanchez for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians while criticizing the All-Star's defense.

Girardi started backup catcher Austin Romine for the second straight game against the Indians at Progressive Field.

"The start is not the message," Girardi told reporters prior to the game. "The message came from us verbally that, 'Your defense needs to improve. That you need to get better. You need to work at it.' We have stressed how important it is."

The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Adam Wainwright from the 10-day disabled list prior to his start in Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.

In addition, the club placed left-hander Kevin Siegrist on the 10-day disabled list with left forearm tendinitis.

Wainwright gave up three runs in three innings and did not get a decision in the Cardinals' victory.

Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier left Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers with an illness.

Dozier was 1-for-3 and hit his 20th homer of the season on Sunday before being replaced by Ehire Adrianza to start the sixth inning with Minnesota leading by one in the finale of the four-game series.
