The West Lincoln-Broadwell Wolverines got a walk-off win on Tuesday evening at Miller Field against the visiting Springfield Calvary Saints.

Daulton Miller's single over the right fielder's head scored Lucas Jones in the bottom of the 8th inning for the win. Jones reached on a perfectly executed bunt basehit down the 3rd base line to lead off the inning.

WLB continued some small-ball as Michael Lucas followed Jones up with another perfectly executed sacrifice bunt down the 1st base line. After an intentional walk to Battin to put runners on 1st and 2nd, Miller drilled a long single over the right fielder's head to record the walk-off win.

Scotty Battin led the Wolverines attack picking up 2 hits, including a double, and scoring 2 runs. In his first action on the mound this season, Battin threw a solid 4 2/3 innings giving up only 2 runs, 1 earned. Both runs came in the 1st inning, as he and reliever Drew Eimer combined with some outstanding defense to hold the Saints scoreless the rest of the way.

The Saints threatened in the top of the 5th inning after Battin retired the first 2 batters he faced before giving up a double and 2 walks, 1 intentionally. Eimer took the ball from Battin with 2 outs in the inning and struck out the 5-hitter to leave the bases loaded and end the threat.

Another key defensive play came in the top of the 6th inning when center fielder Scotty Battin gunned down a runner at the plate after a single up the middle. Battin fielded the hit and fired a perfect 1-hopper to catcher Trey Schilling to record the out and keep the score tied at 2.

In the top of the 7th inning, 2nd baseman Michael Lucas flashed the leather as he snagged a bullet line drive to record the 2nd out and flipped it over to 1st base to double up the runner and end the inning. Eimer recorded the win on the mound throwing 3 1/3 inning of shutout ball.

WLB answered the Saint's 2-run 1st inning with 1 run of their own as Battin doubled to left center with 1 out. After advancing to 3rd base on a passed ball, Daulton Miller struck out but drew a throw from the catcher as the 3rd strike was mishandled. As the throw sailed toward 1st base, Battin took off and scored on the play. Battin scored again in the Wolverine half of the 4th inning on a leadoff single, a stolen base, and then scoring on an errant throw to 3rd base on Battin's 2nd stolen base in the inning.

"Our pitching, defense, and baserunning won the game for us again tonight," said coach Nelson. "We've only given up 3 runs in the past 2 games, which included 15 innings of baseball, which is very good for this level of play. When you have a mixture of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with all levels of experience and you can execute on the mound and in field like that, it's really fun to watch.

These 3-1, 3-2 games are much more fun to play and watch then 16-14 games, in my opinion. On Monday, we allowed 11 base runners and only gave up 1 run and tonight we allowed 13 more runners and gave up only 2 runs, both in the 1st inning. That's a whole bunch of base runners but our defense has been very solid to this point. If we can get our bats going a little bit, it will give us a little more breathing room for our pitchers and defense. The guys have been doing a really nice job so far. We'll take our 2 days of practice this week and work hard on our offense to see if we can start to get hot."

The Wolverines will travel to Mt. Pulaski to take on the Bruins at Bruin Field on Thursday at 4:00pm.

Record: 4-2
