Carson Wentz was 6 for 10 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the visiting Miami Dolphins 38-31 on Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Miami's Jay Cutler was 5 of 8 passing for 105 yards and one touchdown, including a 72-yard completion to wide receiver DeVante Parker (two receptions, 78 yards).

Philadelphia took a 7-0 lead on Wentz's 50-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Torrey Smith that took advantage of an apparent coverage bust by Miami.

Neither team was sharp in the first half, when the starters were in the game. But both teams were opportunistic, turning five first-half turnovers into 28 points -- 21 for Philadelphia. The halftime score -- Philadelphia 28, Miami 24 -- was indicative of the wild first half that saw almost 500 yards of offense.

Panthers 24, Jaguars 23

Backup running back Cameron Artis-Payne scored on an 8-yard run and Garrett Gilbert connected with Kaelin Clay for a two-point conversion with 10:35 remaining that proved to be the difference in Carolina's victory over host Jacksonville.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, playing in his first preseason game this year, was in for only the first series of the game. He directed the Panthers on a 75-yard drive in 10 plays for a touchdown.

Newton connected with Kelvin Benjamin from 9 yards out for the score. He completed his only other pass attempt, a 12-yarder to Christian McCaffrey.
