Highlights of Sunday's MLB games

[August 28, 2017] (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Sunday:

Marlins 6, Padres 2

Giancarlo Stanton belted his 50th homer of the season, a two-run, go-ahead shot in the eighth inning, as the Miami Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres with a 6-2 victory at Marlins Park on Sunday afternoon.

Stanton had three RBIs and has a team-high 108 for the season. He went 3-for-3 with a walk to raise his batting average to .296. He leads the National League in extra-base hits and OPS, and he needs 10 more homers to become just the sixth player in major league history with 60 in a season.

After Stanton's homer put Miami up 4-2, the Marlins added two more runs in the inning. Christian Yelich grounded a triple and scored on a throwing error by Carlos Asuaje on a relay play. It was Yelich's first triple this year. Two batters later, Derek Dietrich drilled his eighth homer of the season and his second in two games.

Brewers 3, Dodgers 2

Jimmy Nelson pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to lead Milwaukee to victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Brewers won the series at Dodger Stadium, the first home series the Dodgers have lost since they dropped the series to Washington on June 7. The Dodgers hadn't lost in their last 22 series, either, a span of nearly three months.

Nelson (10-6) had a no-hitter going until pinch hitter Chase Utley singled with one out in the sixth inning. The 6-foot-6 right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and struck out six.

Hernan Perez hit a homer for the Brewers.

Twins 7, Blue Jays 2

Byron Buxton hit a career-best three home runs and had five RBIs, Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh inning and Minnesota defeated Toronto.

Buxton added an RBI single in his four-hit game as the Twins took the rubber match of the three-game series. With homers in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings, Buxton become the eighth player in Twins history with a three-homer game.

Gibson (8-10) allowed seven hits, one walk and two runs while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings. One of the hits was a solo homer by Norichika Aoki.

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1

Wade Miley's effective start and timely hits by Adam Jones and Trey Mancini helped Baltimore complete a three-game sweep of Boston at Fenway Park.

Miley (8-10) worked five innings, surrendering one run, seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Brad Brach got the final five outs for his 17th save.

Jones and Mancini each had one RBI for the Orioles. Rafael Devers doubled twice and drove in the Red Sox's only run.

Indians 12, Royals 0

Yan Gomes capped a nine-run, three-homer second inning with a grand slam as Cleveland completed a three-game sweep of Kansas City.

Francisco Lindor and Carlos Santana also homered in Cleveland's second inning, when the Indians sent 12 men to the plate.

The Indians shut out Kansas City in all three games of the series: 4-0, 4-0, and 12-0. The Indians have won four games in a row. Cleveland pitchers, who lead the major leagues with 15 shutouts, have pitched 28 consecutive scoreless innings, their longest such streak since a 31-innings scoreless streak in June 2008.

The Royals, who have lost four in a row, have gone a franchise-record 34 consecutive innings without scoring a run.

Yankees 10, Mariners 1

Starlin Castro went 4-for-4 and New York scored six runs in the first inning when Seattle committed five errors.

It was the 16th career four-hit game for Castro and helped the Yankees win for the ninth time in 13 games. New York is 2 1/2 games behind Boston and 3 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for the first American League wild-card spot.

Seattle's Jean Segura was charged with three errors, becoming the first shortstop to make three errors in an inning since Castro did for the Chicago Cubs on April 25, 2011 at Colorado.

The Mariners are 1 1/2 games behind the Twins for the second wild card.

Pirates 5, Reds 2

Starling Marte went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and John Jaso's two-run double in the fourth inning gave Pittsburgh the lead for good against Cincinnati in the finale of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Pittsburgh took two of three in the series after losing eight of its first 10 games against the Reds to begin the season. A.J. Schugel (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win and Felipe Rivero earned his 16th save.

Pittsburgh broke through against rookie Tyler Mahle in the fourth when Jaso's two-run double down the right-field line put them ahead 2-1. Andrew McCutchen's RBI single in the fifth made the score 3-1.

Mets 6, Nationals 5 (Game 1)

Amed Rosario had two hits, including a solo homer in the eighth inning to break a tie, as New York defeated Washington after blowing a 5-0 lead in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

It was the fourth homer of the year and career for Rosario, a rookie who hit a 0-2 pitch from Joe Blanton (2-3) over the fence in center to make it 6-5.

The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first as Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer off rookie Erick Fedde. It was the 10th homer of the year for Cabrera. Wilmer Flores hit his career-high 17th homer in the third, a two-run shot that gave the Mets a 5-0 lead.

Phillies 6, Cubs 3

Rhys Hoskins started a triple play that gave Philadelphia a momentum boost and later homered for the fifth game in a row and the 11th time in 18 career games in a win over Chicago at Citizens Bank Park.

With the Cubs leading 3-0 and runners on first and second with no outs in the fifth, Javier Baez's liner to left was caught by a sliding Hoskins. Anthony Rizzo and Tommy La Stella ventured away from their bases and they were easily forced out.

In the bottom half of the inning, rookie outfielder Nick Williams capped a rally with a two-run homer that put the Phillies up 5-3.

Hoskins, who on Saturday became the fastest player in major league history to reach 10 home runs, launched his latest blast in the eighth inning.

Rockies 3, Braves 0

Jon Gray continued his mastery of Atlanta with six scoreless innings in Colorado's shutout at SunTrust Park.

Gray (6-3) allowed five hits, two walks and struck out seven, one short of his season high, and ended a three-game losing streak on the road. Colorado won two of the three games in the series and won the season series 4-3. Atlanta never had a player reach third base against Gray.

The Colorado offense came from Trevor Story, who doubled in a run in the third inning, and Mark Reynolds, who hit a two-run homer, his 28th, in the sixth. The homer provided the 800th and 801st RBIs in Reynolds' career.

White Sox 7, Tigers 1

Lucas Giolito pitched seven shutout innings for his first career victory and Chicago rolled past Detroit.

Matt Davidson powered the White Sox with a three-run homer. Tim Anderson, Tyler Saladino, Kevan Smith and Yolmer Sanchez each drove in one run apiece as Chicago won the rubber match of the series. Giolito (1-1) held Detroit to three hits in his second start with the White Sox and the sixth of his career.

Ian Kinsler hit a home run in the eighth inning to avoid a shutout loss for Detroit.

Rays 3, Cardinals 2 (10)

Logan Morrison belted his second solo homer of the game with one out in the 10th inning to lift Tampa Bay over St. Louis at Busch Stadium.

Morrison rifled a 1-1 pitch from Sam Tuivailala (3-3) 411 feet to right-center field for his 31st of the year, enabling Tampa Bay to remain three games behind Minnesota for the American League's second wild-card spot.

St. Louis' Matt Carpenter tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff homer to right center.

Astros 7, Angels 5

Brian McCann hit a three-run triple in the eighth inning to help Houston beat Los Angeles and avoid blowing a big lead for the second straight day.

Cam Bedrosian struck out the first two batters in the eighth, but Jose Altuve beat out a routine grounder, Josh Reddick singled and Yuri Gurriel walked to load the bases. McCann then lifted a fly ball to deep center and Mike Trout crashed into the wall as he leaped to make the catch but came up short. All three runners scored to give the Astros a 7-5 lead.

Houston gave up three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to fall behind 5-4 after leading 4-0. Ben Revere's three-run double in the fifth inning cut the deficit to 4-3, and Luis Valbuena's two-run homer in the sixth put Los Angeles ahead 5-4.

Diamondbacks 11, Giants 0

J.D. Martinez had two homers, Paul Goldschmidt hit his 31st of the season and Patrick Corbin pitched seven scoreless innings for his fourth straight victory as Arizona routed San Francisco at Chase Field.

Martinez hit a bases-empty blast for a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning and had another solo shot in a nine-run eighth inning. He has 13 homers in 34 games with Arizona after hitting 16 with Detroit before a July 18 trade. Goldschmidt had a three-run homer, Chris Herrmann had a two-run single and Daniel Descalso homered in the eighth.

Corbin (12-11) gave up five hits and struck out eight in his fifth straight quality start.

Athletics 8, Rangers 3

Jharel Cotton pitched six strong innings, Matt Olson hit a two-run homer and Matt Chapman added a solo shot to lift Oakland past Texas and a sweep of the three-game series.

Cotton (7-10) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out a career high-tying nine batters to win his second consecutive game after losing three straight. Olson went 3-for-4 with his ninth home run of the season and scored twice. Chapman went 3-for-4 with his 10th homer of the season and scored three runs.

Shin-Soo Choo hit his 16th home run of the season for the Rangers.
