Obituary

James D. (Jim) Moriearty , 94, of Lincoln died peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at The Christian Village with his family by his side. He was born September 22, 1922 in Lincoln, the eldest son of James D. and Lucille (Carson) Moriearty. He married Frances Jones on August 15, 1942. She passed away on January 21, 1983.

Jim graduated as co-valedictorian from Lincoln Community High School and attended Lincoln College. In January of 1943 he enlisted in in the U.S. Army Air-Corps. He was deployed in the China-Burma-India campaign in World War II, where he served in Third Combat Cargo Squadron in the Central Burma campaign and was awarded three Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

After his discharge as a Sergeant in January of 1946 he returned to Lincoln, where he completed training as a licensed insurance broker. As an independent agent he established the Moriearty Insurance Agency, which he led for well over 50 years, providing all types of coverage to businesses and families throughout Logan County and beyond. He is remembered by many of his former clients and other Lincoln residents for his support and assistance in times of difficulty and loss. He was active as an officer in the Lincoln Kiwanis Club for many years, and as a volunteer instructor with local Boy Scout Troop 102.

With an active and inquiring mind, Jim was an avid reader and long-time supporter of public television. He loved music, particularly Irish folk music, jazz and the blues.

He also loved nature and travel. With his children and grandchildren, he toured in his motor home throughout the western United States and Canada and deep into Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. He also made trips abroad with family members and friends to the British Isles, Spain, France, Italy, and Cuba.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Dr. Pamela Moriearty of Lincoln, son Scott Moriearty (Yolanda Kodrzycki) of Cambridge, Mass., grandchildren James Grimaldi (Jennifer) of Lincoln, Lane Grimaldi (Angela) of Mahomet, Perry Moriearty (Kyle Hofmann) of Minneapolis, and Eleanor Moriearty of New York City, and eight great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings Jacqueline Simpson of Lincoln, Marjorie Poffenbarger of Morton and Michael Moriearty of Lincoln, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by seven siblings, Patricia, Sue, Carolyn, Norman, John, David and Stephanie.

Following his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Homes. Private family burial and a public Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Creekside Outdoor Center for Environmental Education (Lincoln College), Doctors Without Borders, the Lincoln Public Library, or The Nature Conservancy.
