[December 20, 2017]  LINCOLN - Top 4-H members across the nation gathered in Atlanta, Ga. for the 96th National 4-H Congress on Nov. 24th – Nov. 28th. 4-H members earned the right to attend by excelling in their project work. Each member selected first completed and submitted their 4-H records at the local county level and then moved on to competition at the state level. Members were evaluated on their work in project mastery, leadership, community service and citizenship throughout their entire 4-H career.

Illinois was represented at National 4-H Congress by 12 state 4-H award winners which included Logan County 4-H member Katie Lynn of Lincoln, daughter of Kevin & Tina Lynn and member of the Cloverdale 4-H club. Katie received a trip in the Community Service Award area.

“National 4-H Congress offers states an opportunity to provide these outstanding 4-H youth with an expanded educational experience through seminars, community service projects, and tours sponsored by local and national 4-H program donors,” said Debra Stocker, University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development specialist.

Katie stated “National 4-H Congress was breathtaking. It was really fun to meet other lovers of 4-H from our state as well as from around the nation. The classes were great and gave me great ideas for my 4-H club. The organizers of National 4-H Congress make sure you have a great time and pack every moment possible with something to do. I even enjoyed the gala which included eating fancy food and wearing a ball gown. I definitely would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to go!”

All Congress delegates participated in special cultural programs during the International Dinner and a night of programming at the Atlanta History Center. Other experiences during National 4-H Congress included delegate participation in workshops focused on health, communication and connection, science & technology, inclusion, and service learning.
