[February 10, 2017]  Feb 9 (The Sports Xchange) - The Miami Marlins have a handshake agreement to sell the franchise for $1.6 billion, Forbes reported on Thursday.

According to the report, which is based on two sources, Marlins president David Samson has told some people that the team has an agreement to sell the club. When contacted by the Miami Herald, Samson said he had "no comment at all."

Forbes reported that the agreement is with a New York-based real estate developer. However, there is a problem. The reported buyer does not have enough cash on hand to purchase the Marlins because his money is tied up in real estate. That means the buyer would have to assume considerable debt to buy the club, and Major League Baseball may not be comfortable with that.

Loria paid $158 million to buy the team in 2002.
