[January 18, 2017]    Jan 17 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Islanders fired coach Jack Capuano on Tuesday in the midst of a poor season for the club.

 

The Islanders are 17-17-8 and in last place in the Eastern Conference with 42 points.

The Vancouver Canucks got some bad news regarding the health status of two defensemen.

First the Canucks announced they will shut down Anton Rodin for an indefinite period after he reinjured his knee. Later in the day, the team announced defenseman Ben Hutton, who had signed a two-year contract extension in November, will miss the next three to six weeks with a broken hand.

The Pittsburgh Penguins may get one of their injured defensemen back soon, but now they have lost a forward, as veteran Matt Cullen is expected to miss three to four weeks after being hit by a shot on his right skate on Monday.

The Winnipeg Jets recalled goaltender Ondrej Pavelec from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and retroactively placed defenseman Ben Chiarot on injured reserve with an upper-body injury on Tuesday.

Pavelec, 29, is making his first stint with the Jets this season after spending the previous five seasons with the team.

The Nashville Predators claimed defenseman Brad Hunt off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

Earlier in the day, Nashville assigned left wing Kevin Fiala to the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League and placed defenseman Petter Granberg on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

The Washington Capitals assigned center Chandler Stephenson to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
