[January 24, 2017]    The Hartem boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday night in Auburn. The Stags were playing the tournament hosts and had a chance to win at the buzzer but a shot by Brady Wolpert rattled in and out, according to Coach Jason Garber, and the Stags fell in defeat 42-41.

“This game was back and forth the entire night and no one had a lead larger than five points,” said Garber. “We gave ourselves good looks in the fourth quarter. It’s just unfortunate that the ball did not bounce our way. The guys played with a lot of heart and effort.”

Auburn had the early 13-10 first quarter lead, but the Stags scratched their way back to tie the game at 19-19 by the half.

Auburn held a 38-36 advantage after three quarters of play.

Wolpert, who led the team by scoring 14 points, missed that game winning shot that allowed the Trojans to escape with the 42-41 victory.

Alec Hayes did score six points for the Stags, although he is slowly coming back from the previous night’s ankle injury he suffered. According to Coach Garber, “Hayes is an extremely tough kid and always wants to play no matter what. Auburn did a good job of taking things away from us. Hayes will bounce back tomorrow.”

Hartem returns to the Auburn Tournament to play North Mac tonight at 5 p.m.
