Millikin professor appointed Chair of Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council

[January 30, 2017]  DECATUR – Dr. Dan Monroe, associate professor and chair of the Department of History and Political Science at Millikin University, has been appointed chair of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council for the 2017-2019 term. Dr. Monroe previously served on the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Board for a three-year term, including one year as chair.

"I'm delighted to join the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council and look forward to working with council members and with the staff of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency,” Dr. Monroe said. “Illinois has a rich history that merits our continued preservation efforts.”

The Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council is the body that votes on new National Register Properties in Illinois. The Council meets three times a year and is comprised of 15 members. There are at a minimum, three historians, three architectural historians, or architects with a preservation background, and three archeologists. The remaining six members have to have a preservation interest and are drawn from supporting fields, such as, but not limited to planning, law, local government, and historical geography. All members are appointed by the Director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) and approved by IHPA's Board of Trustees.

Dr. Monroe received a Ph.D. in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998, where he worked with Robert W. Johannsen. Dr. Monroe was the John C. Griswold Distinguished Professor of History at Millikin from 2008-2010. He served as the chair of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council, and he currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Illinois History. He is the author of three books and a number of articles and reviews. Dr. Monroe is currently completing Robert W. Johannsen's biography of James K. Polk.
