Peter Gojowczyk upset defending champion Ivo Karlovic of Croatia on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Hall of Open at Newport, R.I.

The 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4) victory elevates Gojowczyk into his first career ATP semifinal.

The German had 12 aces while outlasting Karlovic in the two-hour, 26-minute match.

The second-seeded Karlovic boomed 30 aces but twice fell in tiebreakers while suffering the disappointing defeat.

"In the end it didn't go my way. That's life, that's tennis. That's how it goes sometimes," Karlovic said afterward. "I was not really moving well. ... Serve was good. Volleys were OK so I have to look at the positives and continue with my journey."

Gojowczyk will face Matthew Ebden of Australia in the semifinals.

Ebden registered a 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Tobias Kamke of Germany. The two-hour, 41-minute victory also puts Ebden in an ATP semifinal for the first time.
