[June 02, 2017]  LINCOLN -  "Inspired By …” is the theme of the upcoming June exhibit by Logan County Arts and the Lincoln Art Institute. For this show, LCA artists will reveal the sources of inspiration behind their latest works. The show will debut with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the Lincoln Art Institute, 112 S. McLean St, Lincoln.

All art begins with an idea or concept that inspires the artist to create a new and unique work. Though crucial to the development of the work, the inspiration that resulted in the completed artwork is frequently not directly stated or described. For this show, the LCA artists will explain the spark of inspiration that lies behind their creations. These artworks will include photography, sculpture, painting and mixed media from artists Suzanne Faulkner, Jason Hoffman, Pam Moriearty, Bev Noble, Moses Pinkerton, Nancy Saul, Rob Swofford, Tony Shuff, Jeff Williams and others.

Sources of inspiration vary widely, from the works of other artists to music to meaningful social and religious concepts. Springfield artist Jeff Williams’ painting reflects his love of bicycling along challenging mountain roads. Rob Swofford’s multimedia work is inspired by some popular musicians, while being subtly critical of others. Pam Moriearty, with a painting informed by artists Henri Matisse and Vincent Van Gogh, noted, “Being inspired by an artist doesn’t mean you want to just copy his or her style or subject matter. When artists look at other people’s work, they are always looking for techniques and inspirations to adapt to express their own ideas.” Other LCA members inspired by professional artists are Moses Pinkerton (Alphonse Mucha), Tony Shuff (J.W.M. Turner) and Jason Hoffman (Jan Brandt).

After the initial reception, the “OPEN” flag flying in front of the Institute will indicate when the gallery is open. Otherwise, the show will be available for viewing until early July by chance or appointment. Visitors may ring the doorbell, and if Pinkerton is available he will open the gallery. For an appointment, people may call Pinkerton at 217-651-8355.

Also available at the “Inspired by …” opening will be information on the July, 2017 exhibit of works from the Decatur Barn Colony artists group.
