[June 06, 2017]  June 5 (The Sports Xchange) - The San Francisco 49ers and five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Elvis Dumervil on Monday agreed to terms on a contract in a bid to bolster the team's pass rush.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch announced the news on Twitter, but terms of the deal were not included. Dumervil confirmed the signing via social media as well.

"After much thought & prayer I have decided to join the @49ers! I look forward to getting to know the NFC West QBs! See you soon SF," Dumervil wrote.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will start throwing during next week's three-day minicamp for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in March.

"He is ahead of schedule," coach Ron Rivera told reporters after Monday's voluntary workout. "We're not putting him ahead of schedule. He's doing all the band-work, all the stretching, all the rehab he's supposed to."

Newton underwent surgery on March 30 to repair a partially torn rotator cuff that was expected to require a four-month rehab process. At the time, the team said the 2015 NFL MVP would not be allowed to throw for 12 weeks and wouldn't throw with the team for 16 weeks.

The Seattle Seahawks signed backup quarterback Austin Davis, closing out any possibility of Colin Kaepernick joining the team.

Davis will join Trevone Boykin as a backup option behind Russell Wilson after the Seahawks waived quarterback Jake Heaps.

Davis and Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks a couple of weeks ago. Coach Pete Carroll indicated last week the team had no plans to sign Kaepernick, who opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March.

Davis, 28, is in his sixth season, entering the league in 2012 with the then-St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi.

New York Giants wide receiver Roger Lewis was arrested last weekend in Ohio and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, police confirmed.

Police said Lewis was pulled over for speeding early Sunday morning in Reynoldsburg, which is just outside Columbus. Officers smelled marijuana and said Lewis demonstrated signs of intoxication, according to media reports.

A Giants spokesman said the team is aware of the incident but will have no further comment.

The Baltimore Ravens signed Brandon Boykin and Al-Hajj Shabazz to contracts and parted ways with fellow cornerback Kyle Arrington.

The move comes four days after Baltimore lost starting cornerback Tavon Young to a season-ending torn ACL.

Boykin, who missed all of last season with a torn pectoral muscle, has eight interceptions in 64 career games with the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Shabazz played in one game with the Houston Texans last season before participating in six games with the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Philadelphia Eagles signed defensive tackle Gabe Wright to a one-year contract to add depth at the position.

Wright, a fourth-round pick by Detroit out of Auburn in 2015, played in 12 games the past two seasons with the Lions and Cleveland Browns, making 10 tackles.

Wright, 25, played in seven games as a rookie before landing with the Browns in 2016 and played in five games last season. ))
