[June 08, 2017]  LINCOLN - This weekend, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, serious treasure hunters can count on finding plenty of items to choose from at the Humane Society of Logan County Annual Garage Sale. The sale will be held at the Logan County Fairgrounds in the "yellow door" building. Hours for the sale will be Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For the really, really serious bargain hunter, a special preview sale will be held this evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a $5 admission fee.

Taking a stroll through the barn on Wednesday, it was abuzz with volunteers sprucing up and pricing the thousands of individual items for sale. Among those volunteers, two were busy getting a battery operated John Deere child's riding toy ready to go. Using an air hose, they were blowing the dust out of all the nooks and crannies then planned to plug the toy in and get it charged up for the sale.

One of the two primary organizers for the sale, Judy Conzo, was busy in the far end of the building sorting and arranging books and other wonderful offerings.

Co-organizer Marilyn Wheat was also busy looking through unique and special donations to be offered as one of several door prizes to be given away at the Thursday evening event. She explained that drawings will be held from the tickets sold Thursday.

Asked what the best deals of the day would be, Wheat said they will all be special. Though she was also quick to point out some items that shoppers may find interesting.

One example was a boxed mint shape Napoleon chess set. The item features Napoleon, his wife Josephine, and his soldiers serving as the chess pieces. There is, of course, a white set and a black set, along with a folding chess board. Wheat said that in preparing for the sale, volunteers spend a lot of time researching similar offerings on internet auction sites. The Napoleon Chess set is listed at $200 on Amazon. HSLC is asking only $50 for this set. Wheat said that the price was right for the garage sale because, in the end, they want to sell the set so they can make money for the shelter.

She also noted several framed prints that are priced at dimes on the dollar compared to online auctions.

This year the sale will feature tons and tons of merchandise from dishes, glasses, cookware, including Pyrex and other name brands, home decor, jewelry, furniture, toys, games, books, bikes, purses, hats, and even some lawn and garden tools and items.

Each year the volunteers at HSLC worked endlessly to get the sale organized to make for a fun and easy shopping experience for treasurer hunters. Donations come in for several weeks before the sale and continue coming right up to the last minute.

Everyone volunteers their time so that the homeless animals in their temporary care may be cared for appropriately. The shelter runs without the benefit of funding from government agencies such as the state, county or city. They have only one paid employee, and scores of volunteers who give their time to benefit the animals in the care of the HSLC.

The annual garage sale is one of three large fundraisers for the organization. The annual breakfast held in May, the garage sale, and Wolfstock, which is held each fall, make up a large portion of the operating cash for the year. Other smaller fundraisers are held throughout the year, and there are always items for sell through the pet cemetery project at the shelter.

The HSLC appreciates all the efforts of the community, from pet food drives held by school children, to supporters of the fundraising events, to those who volunteer to work on projects such as the garage sale, and those who make time to come to the shelter and help with care, feeding, and socialization of the pets.

If you are a very serious shopper, you won't want to miss the preview night tonight. However, if you can't make it out tonight we suspect there will still be plenty to choose from on the sale days over the weekend.
