MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins, who were being no-hit and shut out for 7 1/3 innings by Max Scherzer, rallied to defeat the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Wednesday.

Scherzer (8-5) had his attempt at a third career no-hitter broken up by backup catcher A.J. Ellis, who hit a comebacker for an infield single with one out in the eighth inning.

Ellis, who is hitting only .204, didn't hit the ball particularly hard, but the ball bounced off Scherzer's glove, and shortstop Trea Turner couldn't make the play in time.

Pinch hitter J.T. Realmuto reached on a two-out fielding error credited to first baseman Adam Lind, who could not come up with Turner's low throw. Dee Gordon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and the Marlins tied the score on a high wild pitch by Scherzer. Giancarlo Stanton's single gave Miami the lead.

Diamondbacks 16, Rockies 5

DENVER -- Brandon Drury had four hits and drove in a career-high six runs, Nick Ahmed homered and Arizona used a 10-run fourth inning to beat Colorado.

David Peralta had four hits, Paul Goldschmidt had three and Taijuan Walker (6-3) went six innings and added a single to help the Diamondbacks end the Rockies' six-game winning streak. Walker allowed three runs and struck out eight.

The 10 runs and nine hits are a club record for one inning on the road. Arizona finished with season highs in runs and hits (20).

Dodgers 8, Mets 2

LOS ANGELES -- Rich Hill allowed one run in five innings and Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homer as Los Angeles won its sixth straight game.

The Dodgers moved into first place in the National League West, a half-game ahead of the Colorado Rockies. Since May 25, the Dodgers are 20-6. They are 28-10 in home games this year.

Yasmani Grandal hit solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings, giving him nine homers this season. The Dodgers have 30 in their past 11 games. Hill (4-3) went five innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Braves 5, Giants 3 (11)

ATLANTA -- Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to give Atlanta the victory over San Francisco.

Nick Markakis walked with one out, and Kemp connected on a 0-1 pitch for an opposite-field homer to right field off Cory Gearrin (1-2). It was Kemp's 12th home run of the season and his seventh career game-ending hit.

Hunter Pence's fifth home run of the season, on the first pitch from Braves closer Jim Johnson with one out in the ninth inning, tied the game and cost Sean Newcomb his first major league victory. Newcomb allowed three hits and one run over six innings while lowering his ERA to 1.96.

Yankees 8, Angels 4

NEW YORK -- Austin Romine tied a career high with three hits, including a two-run double in the sixth inning, as New York snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Romine's fifth career three-hit game helped the Yankees stop their longest losing streak since April 2007 and avoid dropping an eighth straight game for the first time since Aug. 19-26, 1995.

New York's Didi Gregorius hit a two-run homer, and Matt Holliday became the fifth active player to reach 1,200 RBIs when he hit a solo homer. Aaron Hicks, Starlin Castro and Chase Headley added RBI singles for the Yankees.

Astros 5, Athletics 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mike Fiers pitched six strong innings for his fourth consecutive victory, Carlos Correa hit his 14th home run, and Houston continued its mastery of Oakland.

Fiers (5-2) allowed one run on three hits, struck out five and walked three as he beat the Athletics for the first time in seven career starts (1-2). Evan Gattis and Jake Marisnick each had two RBIs for the Astros. Correa went 2-for-5 with a solo shot and scored twice.

Houston defeated Oakland for the ninth straight time at the Oakland Coliseum and improved to 5-0 there this season. The Astros have won 14 of their past 15 games against the Athletics.

Mariners 7, Tigers 5

SEATTLE -- Robinson Cano broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run double with two outs in the seventh inning and Nelson Cruz followed with a run-scoring single as Seattle won its fourth straight game.

The Mariners' Mitch Haniger led off the seventh with a home run to left field, his sixth homer of the season, to even the score at 4-4. Seattle didn't have a baserunner for the first five innings against Justin Verlander.

Reliever Tony Zych (3-2) got the victory and Edwin Diaz, despite allowing a ninth-inning solo homer by Ian Kinsler, got his 12th save. Shane Greene (1-1) allowed four runs on three hits in one inning of relief for Detroit, which dropped its fifth in a row.

Royals 6, Red Sox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez went 3-for-3 with a grand slam as Kansas City rallied to defeat Boston.

Perez homered in the eighth inning after Red Sox relievers Matt Barnes and Robby Scott (0-1) walked the bases loaded with nobody out. Perez worked the count full before propelling a Scott pitch out to left, scoring Jorge Bonifacio, Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer.

[to top of second column]

Kelvin Herrera pitched around Jackie Bradley Jr.'s leadoff double in the ninth to collect his 17th save. Joakim Soria (3-2) worked a perfect eighth to pick up the victory.

Indians 5, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Francisco Lindor hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs, and Carlos Carrasco threw six-plus solid innings as Cleveland defeated Baltimore.

Lindor's homer was the big hit in a three-run fifth inning against Orioles starter Kevin Gausman (3-7), which gave the Indians a lead they never lost. Roberto Perez lined an RBI double just before the home run.

In the ninth, Lindor added an RBI single as did Jason Kipnis to make it 5-0. That also extended Baltimore's American League-record streak of allowing at least five runs to 18 games -- two shy of the major league mark set by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies.

Brewers 4, Pirates 3

MILWAUKEE -- Domingo Santana hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning as Milwaukee rallied past Pittsburgh.

The Pirates' Trevor Williams cruised through his first six innings, leading 3-1, before giving up a single to Keon Broxton and a double to Orlando Arcia to open the seventh. Tony Watson came on to face pinch hitter Eric Thames, who drove in Broxton to make it a one-run game.

Watson struck out Eric Sogard and was replaced by Daniel Hudson. Hudson (1-3) fell behind 2-0 and left a fastball over the plate just enough for Santana, who connected for his 12th of the season to cap a two-hit, three-RBI performance.

Twins 4, White Sox 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jose Berrios allowed two runs and four hits in eight strong innings and Miguel Sano's solo blast in the third inning gave Minnesota the lead for good.

Berrios (7-1), who was 3-7 with an 8.02 ERA in 14 starts for Minnesota as a rookie in 2016, struck out eight and walked one. Brandon Kintzler pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save in 22 opportunities.

The Twins jumped on David Holmberg (1-1) for three runs, one earned, in the third, starting with Sano's leadoff homer. Sano turned on Holmberg's 3-0 fastball, sending it 414 feet into the second deck in right-center field for his 18th home run of the season.

Blue Jays 7, Rangers 5

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Darwin Barney capped Toronto's six-run first inning with a two-run homer and the Blue Jays hung on to defeat Texas.

Justin Smoak got the Jays on the board with an RBI single off Tyson Ross (1-1) and, two batters later, Steve Pearce added an RBI double. Ryan Goins followed with a two-run double before Darwin Barney capped the inning with his blast.

Joe Biagini (2-6) made those runs stand up for his first win since May 12. Pearce went 3-for-3, Smoak was 2-for-5 with two runs and Kendrys Morales also had a pair of hits for the Jays, who finished with 11.

Padres 3, Cubs 2

CHICAGO -- Wil Myers scored on an eighth-inning bases-loaded walk as San Diego beat Chicago to salvage the finale of a three-game series.

Cubs reliever Koji Uehara filled the bases in the Padres' eighth, then walked Luis Torrens with two outs to bring in Myers from third for the go-ahead run.

San Diego releiver Phil Maton (1-0) worked a scoreless seventh for the victory as the Padres broke a three-game losing streak.

Cardinals 7, Phillies 6 (10)

PHILADELPHIA -- Tommy Pham hit two home runs, including a game-tying blast in the ninth inning, as St. Louis erased a 5-0 deficit to defeat Philadelphia.

The Cardinals took the lead when Jose Martinez led off the 10th inning with a double and advanced to third on a balk by Edubray Ramos (0-6). Martinez scored when Ramos made an errant pickoff throw to first base. Yadier Molina added an RBI single.

Seung-Hwan Oh allowed an RBI single to Cameron Perkins in the bottom of the 10th but still picked up his 16th save of the season. Rookie starter Nick Pivetta struck out a career-high 10 for the Phillies, who have lost 13 of their last 14 games.

Rays 8, Reds 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Erasmo Ramirez dominated early and Tampa Bay's bats broke open a close game, getting four runs in the sixth on the way to a victory over Cincinnati.

The Rays won two of three vs. the Reds, and Ramirez (4-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Up only 3-2 in the sixth, Tampa Bay got two-out RBI singles from Corey Dickerson and Steven Souza and a two-run double by Logan Morrison.

Cincinnati has dropped 11 of its last 12 road games and still has four more ahead before it returns home. The Rays have won nine of their last 12 at home, with three more ahead this weekend.
