[March 01, 2017]  After the holidays, people sometimes tend to focus on New Year’s resolutions and weight loss goals. The Lincoln Park District Fit Zone took a different approach this year. We wanted to simply focus on being well during the winter.

January can be a blue time of the year for some. People may struggle financially after the holidays, work more overtime, gain unwanted weight, or not get the adequate rest they need.

We didn’t want people to focus too much on self-image that they forget to think about just being well. We wanted to put an emphasis on lifestyle changes and how to help people feel good about themselves.

The challenge needed to be very affordable and attainable to those who wanted to take part in this program. The Lincoln Park District offered the 6-week challenge to members for only $20.00 and $65.00 for non-members (The $65.00 included a 6-week Full Access membership to non-members).

The entire Winter Wellness Challenge package included the following:

  • Fitness Assessment, body composition and weigh in
  • Weekly tracking of measurements, weight or other wellness goals set with trainer/coach
  • All Group Fitness Classes and suggested classes that will fit your specific fitness level and goals
  • Discount on Specialized Small Group Personal Training Classes
  • Introduction and instruction to the Circuit and Strength areas
  • A weekly consultation with a trainer/coach
  • An informational session about Beverly Products sold at the Lincoln Park District
  • 15% off any Beverly Product for the entire 6 weeks
  • Nutritional advice and assistance
  • Accountability and motivational packet
  • Access to private Facebook page with daily workouts, recipes, trainer tips and more!
  • Entry in to a drawing for a One Month Full Access Membership or 3 Personal Training Sessions

We began the challenge on January 9, 2017 with eighteen dedicated people. They each had different wellness goals in mind. Yes, some wanted to lose a few extra pounds, but many just simply wanted guidance on how to balance fitness, nutrition and rest with everyday life and stay well. We had men and women of all ages. Some struggle with diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, portion control, weekly food prep, what supplements they should take, etc.

A few of the participants even took part in a Small Group Personal Training class lead by coach, Michelle Ryan. This was a great way for them to receive one on one training, yet get used to attending a group fitness class.

With the guidance of Jacki Pavlik, Jennifer Prather and Michelle Ryan, many of the participants in the group have made some really great strides within the 6-weeks. Some have lost inches, learned how to prep food, attend the group classes fit to their fitness level, experienced new exercises, tried healthy recipes, increased their walking mileage and so much more!

The Winter Wellness Challenge of 2017 was such a huge success that we had several of the participants ask if we can extend the challenge a few more weeks!
