Lincoln College Baseball Opens Up Season 4-0

[March 08, 2017]    The Lincoln College Baseball team kicked off their 2017 campaign in Winter Haven, Florida this week with a pair of double-header sweeps.

 

On Monday, the Lynx defeated Delta Community College from Bay City, Michigan twice by scores of 9-4 and 8-4. Sophomore Matt Winscher (O’Fallon, MO) earned the victory in the first game going seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three. Freshman Ryan Thomas (Lincoln) had a big day in his Lynx debut going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Thomas led the team with three runs batted in. In the second game, LC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead then scored three in the third in support of freshman starting pitcher Ben Steiner (Lincoln). Steiner would go on to get the win for LC by pitching five innings giving up three runs on six hits and striking out one. LC hitters pounded out ten hits in the game with several players turning in multiple hit performances.

On Tuesday, Lincoln traveled to Auburndale, FL and rolled to two big wins over the Penn State-Abingdon JV team. LC took game one 11-3 behind the solid starting pitching of freshman Andrew Bernas (Lansing, IL) Bernas tossed five innings and only gave up two hits while recording seven K’s. Sophomores Jamie Valdez (Addison Trail) and Wyatt Eldrigde (Jackson, MO) were clutch at the plate as each drove in two runs. In game two, pitchers Hayden Radford (So., Desoto, MO) and Ty Mattix (So., Monticello, IN) teamed up to shutout PS-A and the Lincoln bats came through again to finish the sweep with a 10-0 win. Sophomore Ezra Isreal (Tremont) and Valdez each had multiple hit games for the Lynx.

LC Coach Tony Thomas is pleased with the way his team is performing in the early going. “We have played well in all aspects at this point. Our starting pitching has been solid, we’ve gotten timely hitting with runners on, and we have played well defensively,” wrote Thomas via text. He added, “It has been fun to watch. Our guys have been focused from pitch one.”

Lincoln (4-0) will be in action next on Thursday as they continue their run through the state of Florida by moving to Leesburg to take on Glen Oaks CC at 11:00 AM.
