[March 17, 2017]    March 16 (The Sports Xchange) - Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer likely will miss the Washington Nationals' season opener because of a stress fracture in his right ring finger, manager Dusty Baker said on Thursday.

 

Scherzer, who has altered the grip on his fastball as a result of the injury, has been limited to tossing batting practice on two occasions during spring training. The 32-year-old has yet to appear in an exhibition game with the Nationals.

The Florida Wildlife Commission determined Jose Fernandez was the operator of the speeding boat that crashed and killed the Miami Marlins pitcher and two others in the early morning of Sept. 25, 2016, according to the investigation report concluded after six months.

ESPN and the Miami Herald reported the findings also confirmed alcohol and drugs were involved and that Fernandez violated multiple boating laws, including Boating Under the Influence Manslaughter, Vessel Homicide and Reckless or Careless Operation of a Vessel.

The New York Yankees signed right-hander Ernesto Frieri to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced.

Frieri, 31, last pitched in the major leagues in 2015, when he appeared in 22 games for the Tampa Bay Rays. He had a 1-0 mark with a 4.63 ERA in 23 1/3 innings.
