Bringing the outdoors inside with light and airy colors

[May 08, 2017]  When it is cold outside, gray and dreary, and the wind whips around the corner of the house, we sometimes enjoy creating a warm, cozy feeling inside. Dark, warm colors such as burnt orange, chocolate brown, and deep reds can add warmth and coziness to a family room. Heavy drapes that close completely can add to that warm feeling and also add a layer of insulation between you and the outdoor cold.

But, when summertime comes, those same warm colors and heavy drapes become stifling, making us feel hot and uncomfortable. Changing out some of your home accents, taking away the dark and now dreary, replacing with bright and airy colors and fabrics can make your home feel cool and fresh.

It’s not as hard as one would think, and if you have a little bit of crafting talent, freshening your home can be fun and inexpensive.

In a video by Clutterbug, she offers her top five tips for refreshing your home and a link to five additional tips by Sensational Finds.

Clutterbug uses three items that stand out, a trio of succulents in matching pots. Be sure to take a look at those. Here in Lincoln, Walmart is offering very similar products, and some of them have been painted in bright springy colors.

Clutterbug also talks about the use of bright colors such as yellow, and shows a cute little throw pillow. You can make your own throw pillows with little or even no sewing involved. In the following video, check out how to make a cute bow pillow with no sewing!

This is a fun little video with no talking, just a simple how-to demonstration on how to make the pillow. These videos can be fun, and the best part of it, if you miss a step or fall behind, you can always rewind and view it again!

If you’re not one to get crafty, then buying pillows is a great option. But, sometimes it is hard to decide when you’re in the store what to buy. The first step, decide where you want to place pillows and how they will be used.

In this video, Junie Moon Creations offers some tips on how to choose the perfect pillows, based on where and how you plan to use them.

Changing the pillows on your sofa especially can have a huge impact on the overall feeling of the room. Bringing bright colors to a dark sofa can cool it down considerably.

Another great way to bring spring and summer inside is with fresh cut flowers. You can actually grow your own flowers in your garden. Summer bloomers like Cosmos and Zinnias are easy to grow from seed, and produce great color and greenery. Seeds are easily available at several places in town including Ace Hardware, Walmart, and Big R.

For some, the idea of cutting and arranging flowers may be a bit intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. First remember that outside, flowers do not grow in asymmetrical design. Some get tall, some don’t, some will stand up straight, and some like to lean a bit. In your arrangements, don’t try to force your cut flowers into an unnatural formation. Let them go their own way, with only a few suggestions from you.

If growing flowers is not for you, fresh cut flowers are easy to find. Look at the ALMH Farmers Market, Kroger, or Walmart and pick what you like. In this video by “Jennifer Decorates,” Jennifer is going to show you how to use wet foam and how to put together a more formal arrangement, perfect for your dining room table.

Dominique Sachse will also demonstrate how to do floral arrangements in clear glass. Her video “How I create floral arrangements for my home” talks about keeping it clean and simple, and also doing it any way you wish. There are some hard fast rules to flower arranging, but for the most part the best rule is do what you like!

For some of you, fresh cut flowers may not be the answer. There are factors to consider such as allergies that may make you choose to go with a fabulous fake instead of fresh cut. Silk flowers are also easy to come by in this area. If you’re looking for the fabulous fancy flowers, check out the selections available around town, or you may wish to venture to a craft store.

If you’re looking for light, whimsy and inexpensive, visit the local Dollar Tree or Dollar General. In this video, learn how to do a simple but pretty table centerpiece with products purchased at Dollar Tree.

Switching out those heavy drapes for something light, airy and sheer will visually cool down the room, bring in more light, and really change the overall sense of your surroundings. Curtains are a great accent and the choices available are endless. The next two videos provide views of window treatments using sheers and lace curtains.

Now that you have seen the options, envision your favorites from the videos in your home, then it’s time to go shopping, right? Well, not so fast. To assure that you are happy with your purchases once they are hanging in your room, prepare and plan ahead of time.

Measuring the window for a curtain is key to having a nice looking end result.

In this video Amy Armstrong gives tips on how to measure for your curtains, so when you get to the store you’ll know exactly what you need!

Finally, it is important to remember that the videos provided are merely suggestions. What you do in your home is up to you. Make it something you love, something you’ll enjoy seeing every day for the summer season. It is also good to remember that just like when you go to get a haircut, the end result will probably not look exactly like the picture. Use the videos as a guide, but not a rule.
