[May 09, 2017]  LINCOLN - The five Lincoln school chapters of 'Girls on the Run' met at Kickapoo Creek Park on Tuesday afternoon to warm up and practice a run together.

Girls on the Run is a nation-wide program that got its start in Logan County a few years ago. It emphasizes social development and self-confidence blended with physical activity for girls in 3rd-8th grade. Chapters are based in schools with volunteer leaders and coaches provided curriculum.

Local chapters include: Carroll Catholic, Central, Northwest, Washington-Monroe Grade School and West Lincoln Broadwell schools in Lincoln; New Holland - Middletown School and nearby Illini Central Grade School, Mason City.

The girls will be going to a large regional Celebratory 5K Run that begins at 10 a.m. on May 20th at Lincoln Land Community College.

Tuesday’s run was launched with a Lincoln Police squad car and Lincoln Fire Department fire truck in the lead. Loads of family were there to cheer the girls all along the 5 K or 3.2-mile trail, twice around the park.

On Tuesday the respect for each and every one was evident and the atmospheric energy was abounding in primo girl power.

Fourth grade teacher Desirae Winter said she had looked forward to working with the girls this year and really appreciates what it does in building them up. All the leaders and coaches expressed the same in their enthusiasm this day, and the girls reflected all that positivity too.

The mission of Girls on the Run states:

We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The Girls on the run program is open to girls 3rd-8th grade. The program curriculum provides lessons that "encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development."

Girls on the Run moto:

"We believe that every girl
can embrace who she is,
can define who she wants to be,
can rise to any challenge,
can change the world.
Can."
