On Saturday, the Borst Family Bonanza in Lincoln once again hosted free meals for local military members, both active servicemen and veterans.

During the noon hour, many tables were occupied by local veterans. Some had come in following the services at the VFW to enjoy the buffet lunch with friends, family, or fellow veterans. It is a genuine day of comradery as soldiers share time with fellow soldiers, reminiscing over days past, telling stories of their days of service, and remembering those who made large impacts on their service career and their lives in general.

Wayne Shelley and Orville Schaffer were on hand as well, with a table set up to speak with local veterans of World War II, the Korean Conflict, or the Vietnam War about signing up for a Land of Lincoln Honor Flight in 2018.

Helping with food services throughout the day were members of the local Boys Scouts. The young men helped veterans find seating, and assisted with services such as refilling coffee and other beverages, and bussing tables.

Restaurant owner Brett Borst is always on hand for this day. He enjoys going table to table, speaking with his veteran guests, many of whom know him on a first name basis, and he them. He noted that as some offered sincere appreciation for a free meal, he is the one who is filled with appreciation.

Borst humbly said, “It is always a fun day. I get to hear some wonderful stories, and I tell them it is because of them we can serve American food today.”
