The Seattle Mariners signed right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced Monday.

Iwakuma posted an 0-2 mark with a 4.35 ERA in six starts with the Mariners last season. The 36-year-old Japanese pitcher was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on May 10 before being transferred to the 60-day DL on July 24.

Iwakuma underwent arthroscopic right shoulder debridement surgery on Sept. 27. The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas.

Iwakuma led the Mariners in wins (16), starts (33), innings pitched (199) and strikeouts (147) during the 2016 season.
