[October 06, 2017]  (The Sports Xchange) - The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Mark Borowiecki to a two-year, $2.4 million contract extension on Thursday.

Borowiecki, who is entering the final season of a three-year, $3.3 million contract, led the NHL in hits (364) and penalty minutes (154) last season.

The 28-year-old Ottawa native collected one goal and two assists in a career-high 70 games last season with the Senators.

The Anaheim Ducks recalled forward Giovanni Fiore in advance of their season opener against the visiting Arizona Coyotes.

Fiore was demoted to San Diego of the AHL on Tuesday but was recalled 48 hours later due to a number of injuries on the team's roster. Captain Ryan Getzlaf was ruled out of the opener earlier Thursday.

The 21-year-old Fiore, an undrafted free agent, scored a goal and collected a pair of assists in two preseason games for the Ducks.

The Hurricanes have been without a captain since trading Eric Staal, Jordan's brother, to the New York Rangers in February 2016. Jordan Staal and Faulk joined forwards Jeff Skinner and Victor Rask as alternate captains last season, with Skinner remaining in that role for the 2017-18 campaign.

Coach Bill Peters announced that Jordan Staal would serve as the team's captain at home, while Faulk would have the honor on the road. The players will switch at midseason, Peters said.
