Lundqvist allowed five goals in the first period against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday and was removed from the game. He had allowed eight goals in four periods and was scheduled to get Sunday off before his poor showing in Toronto on Saturday.

Mika Zibanejad scored his fourth goal of the season Sunday, and Brady Skjei scored his first.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price allowed two goals on 25 shots to absorb the loss.

Dating to their first-round playoff series last season, the Canadiens have lost four straight to the Rangers (1-2-0) while scoring four total goals.

The Canadiens (1-2-0) appeared to score twice in the first period, only to have the goals overturned by video review.

Brendan Gallagher initially was credited with a goal after a scramble around the crease, but officials determined the puck was kicked into the net. A few minutes later, Max Pacioretty was called for goaltender interference to negate a goal from Shea Weber.

Skjei scored the game's first legal goal with 2:35 remaining in the first period. He fired the puck toward the front of the net, where it banked off the skate of Weber and past Price to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead, their first lead in three games this season.

Zibanejad gave the Rangers breathing room when he scored at 9:13 of the third period. Pavel Buchnevich set up the goal with a brilliant pass from behind the net, waiting for Price to look to his left before passing the puck the other way to Zibanejad on the doorstep.

Price went to the bench for an extra attacker with a little more than two minutes remaining, but the Canadiens were unable to break the shutout.
