[October 10, 2017]  (The Sports Xchange) - The Florida Panthers signed defenseman Mike Matheson to an eight-year contract extension on Monday.

Matheson, 23, recorded 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 81 games during his 2016-17 rookie season, averaging 21:03 of ice time.

Financial terms of the deal were not released, but Sportsnet reported Saturday night that the Panthers were working on the extension with an average annual value of just under $5 million. Matheson was in the final season of his three-year, entry-level contract.

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired goaltender Dustin Tokarski from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for future considerations.

The Flyers promptly assigned Tokarski to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League.

Tokarski stopped all five shots he faced in one appearance with Anaheim last season. The 28-year-old Saskatchewan native has posted a 10-12-5 mark with one shutout, a 2.84 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 34 career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Montreal Canadiens and Ducks.

The New York Rangers claimed forward Adam Cracknell off waivers.

Cracknell, 32, played in one game with the Dallas Stars this season before being placed on waivers Sunday. He owns 43 career points (21 goals, 22 assists) and 46 penalty minutes skated in 204 NHL games with St. Louis, Columbus, Vancouver, Edmonton and Dallas.

The Arizona Coyotes recalled forward Mario Kempe from the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL and assigned center Dylan Strome to their AHL affiliate.

Kempe, 29, recorded 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) and 28 penalty minutes in 56 games with Vityaz Podolsk of the Kontinental Hockey League last season. The 6-foot, 185-pound native of Kramfors, Sweden, had one goal and two assists in one game with Tucson this season. Kempe was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fifth round of the 2007 draft.
