[October 13, 2017]   The Olympia FFA Chapter Land-Use team placed 4th at the Section 9 FFA Land-Use CDE on September 26th.

Cody Gibson was the high individual on the team and placed 6th overall. Other team members included Aaron Baker, Cavit Schempp, Josh Kindred, Dawson Banister, and Josie Litwiller.

FFA members evaluated soil for different characteristics such as soil color, drainage, permeability, texture, structure, and depth. Students also calculated slope and determined how the soil should best be used in a conservation program.

Senior Josh Kindred uses a sight level to determine slope at the Land-Use CDE.

Sophomore Cavit Schempp said, “I look forward to attending this contest again next year because I enjoy playing in the soil.” The contest was held at Rooster Heaven Hunt Club north of Forrest, IL. The students practiced at the high school in a practice soil pit that was dug by alumni member, Jake Owen.

Equipment for digging the practice pit was donated by Cross Implement, Inc., Minier.
