The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team hosted the Mid-West Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday and finished the event with one win and two losses.

LC got off to a strong start by defeating Lewis and Clark College in three sets. Neither team was able to build more than a two or three point lead throughout the match, but Lincoln managed to grab the momentum at the right time to claim victory in all three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 27-25.

Sophomore outside hitter Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) led all hitters with 12 kills and was second in digs with 13. Freshman libero Megan Gilliam (Waterloo) just edged Hoffert by collecting 14 digs in the match. Gilliam also served five points which was second only to the 11 points served by fellow freshman Maddie Malinowski (Bloomington).

In their second match of the event, Lincoln faced the #2 ranked team in the nation from Parkland College (38-1). The Lynx hung right with the Cobras in the early going of set one as the two teams battled their way to an 11-11 tie.

However, a 7-1 run by Parkland quickly put LC behind for good. Parkland would go on to take the set 25-17. Sets two and three turned into routes as Parkland played virtually error free to win by comfortable margins of 25-14 and 25-10.

Lincoln did not have long to dwell on the loss as they had to face Lincoln Land CC in their final match of the event. The Lady Lynx made a much better showing against the #5 ranked Loggers, but still went down to defeat in three sets. In each set, LC was able to keep the scores close by siding out effectively and serving well enough to disrupt the LLCC offense. However, in each set, the Lady Lynx would stall at the end and wind up with three close losses of 25=20, 25-21 and 25-21.

Overall, Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett was encouraged by the results of the day. “We hit the ball very well when we were in system today, and the fact that we were able to control the tempo of play so well against Lewis & Clark was encouraging as they are a possible opponent for us in the post-season,” said Tippett. “We had a nice half of a set against Parkland, but after that it was not pretty. I was glad to see us rebound and play a very competitive match against Lincoln Land. Each set was close and I liked the way we stayed positive throughout the day.”

Lincoln moves to 17-10 on the season and will be in action next on Tuesday with a road match at SWIC.
