The
disasters in the southern United States have created a sense of
urgency for retirement communities to be prepared to protect the
safety of residents and guests.
November 17th marks the fourth anniversary of the tornado that hit
Washington, Illinois. Washington Christian Village (WCV) was spared
serious damage, but the tornado literally destroyed most of the
surrounding homes. The staff responded quickly and efficiently to
the disaster, but there were many unforeseen tragedies.
Building on the experience of WCV, Christian Horizons (parent
company to WCV and The Christian Village) has developed a plan,
working with local emergency management personnel, to train staff to
respond quickly and efficiently to protect our residents and guest.
Frontline staff have contributed as well as management in developing
the response program for an emergency which damages the care center
and necessitates an evacuation.

Today, Tuesday, October 17th, with cooperation of local EMA
representatives, The Christian Village will conduct a mock evacuation using
volunteer residents to train staff to respond quickly and efficiently. The
forecast calls for beautiful weather, so the residents who participate will be
treated to a fall snack while they wait outdoors for the conclusion of the
drill.
The drill will begin at 1:30 p.m. Please note, there is no
true emergency, and only residents who volunteer will be included in the
evacuation exercise.
