LINCOLN

On Wednesday, the Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team recognized the month of October as being Breast Cancer Awareness month by hosting a “Dig Pink” night for their match against Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC). In the match, The Lady Lynx earned a three-set victory over IVCC to run their winning streak to five in a row.

Set one against IVCC was dominated by Lincoln from the start. LC controlled the pace of play and made very few errors on their way to a 25-9 route. In set two, the Eagles put up more of a resistance and were able to find enough ways to score to keep the score close in the early going. The two teams battled their way to a 13-13 tie score. At that point, an IVCC serving error sent sophomore setter Makayla Suelter (Peoria) to the service line. Suelter would run off four straight points to put LC up for good. Lincoln went on to take the set 25-17.

In set three, LC jumped out to a 8-3 lead, but was unable to keep the momentum going their way and let IVCC back in the set. The Eagles managed to work their way back to take a 14-13 lead in the set, but a kill down the line by sophomore Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) and two quick points served by freshman defensive specialist Ciara Yon (Granite City) put LC up for good. Lincoln would go on to win the set 25-19.

In the match, Lincoln featured a balanced attack with five different players recording six or more kills. The overall kill leaders for LC were Kaylyn Hoffert with nine and Mikayla Siebert (Mackinaw) with eight. Each of the three Lincoln setters who played in the match (Abbi Buelow, Jenna Weller & Makayla Suelter) were credited with 11 set assists. Libero Megan Gilliam (Waterloo) and defensive specialist Melanie Murray (Chicago) combined for 28 total digs on the night. Suelter led the team in points scored with nine.

Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett was impressed with his team’s performance. “We were sharp in all aspects of the game tonight,” he remarked. “We got positive contributions from every player tonight and it was satisfying to see our team playing this well at the end of the season.”

Lincoln’s record now stands at 22-11 on the year with one more regular season match to play. The Lady Lynx will host the Millikin University JV for a 6:30 p.m. match on Thursday evening.
