[September 07, 2017]    On Tuesday, the Lincoln College Men's Soccer team defeated Region 24 opponent Illinois Central College 2-1 in overtime.

The Lynx played aggressively to start the match, but were unable to break through the ICC defense despite several good looks. The pressure they were able to put on finally paid off when a long shot by freshman Ignacio Ximenez (Laurenceville, GA) resulted in a handball in the box. Lincoln was then awarded a penalty kick which sophomore Adrian Roman (Waugegen) slotted home to put LC on the board. The goal was Roman’s 4th of the season. The score would remain 1-0 at the end of the first half.

“Both teams played very hard in the first half,” said LC Coach Ben Massena, “Any match between teams in our Region is going to be intense.”

LC came out of the break refreshed and intent on resuming their strategy of putting as much pressure as possible on the Cougar defense. Massena was happy with his team’s effort, “It was all us for the first 40 minutes of the half. We wanted to get that second goal badly, and had several chances, but just couldn’t convert.”

The attacking strategy deployed by the Lynx did not come without risk though, as ICC eventually made them pay for having so many players forward. In the 70th minute, the Cougar’s broke out from their end of the field and scored off a set piece to tie the score at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score again in regulation which sent the match into extra time. NJCAA rules allow for two 10 minute overtime periods at the end of regulation with the first goal scored ending the match.

Eight minutes into the overtime period, Lincoln’s Ximenez hit a low shot from 20 yards out that beat the Illinois Central keeper to give the Lynx the winning goal.

Coach Massena was impressed with the way his team played. He said, “It was a tiring game, and both teams were exhausted, but in overtime all were playing to win and not settle for a tie. It was a really fun match to watch and a solid win for our guys. ”

This victory makes it 2 in a row for LC and improves their overall record to 2-1.

The Lynx travel on Saturday, September 9, to take on Parkland College (#8) at 2:00 p.m.
