Daughters of the American Revolution hosting annual kick-off event Wednesday, September 13th

[September 11, 2017]   LINCOLN - The kick off meeting for Abraham Lincoln Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Chestnut Family Restaurant. Following the luncheon members will travel to Gail’s Pumpkin Patch.

A photo opportunity at the Chestnut Geological Center marker is also planned. Members will carpool to Chestnut at 11 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church parking lot in Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln Chapter was founded in 1896 and continues to pursue its objectives of promoting historical, educational, and patriotic values.

Community service projects include the annual presentation of Good Citizen Awards to seniors at Hartsburg-Emden, Illini Central, Lincoln Community, and Mount Pulaski High Schools.

Excellence in American History Awards are given to junior high students at Carroll, Chester-East Lincoln, Hartsburg-Emden, Illini Central, Lincoln Junior High, Mount Pulaski, New Holland-Middletown, West Lincoln-Broadwell, and Zion Lutheran Schools.

This past summer chapter members joined with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to conduct a flag disposal ceremony.

The chapter also recognizes area residents for their accomplishments.

It was the DAR which founded the first Logan County Historical Society in 1897. Over the years the chapter has dedicated historic markers.

A marker on the lawn of the First Logan County Courthouse was placed in memory of Abraham Lincoln. Another marker paying tribute to Lincoln was located on the present courthouse lawn. A bronze plaque in memory and honor of six Revolutionary Soldiers buried in Logan County was erected at the courthouse in 1976.

In addition the DAR marked the Union Cemetery grave of Virginia Josephine Davis Wodetzki, a life member of the chapter and a real daughter. She was the daughter of Revolutionary Soldier Sgt. Samuel Davis. A Lincoln Memorial boulder was also placed at Postville Courthouse.

The Chapter was also instrumental in the placing of markers designating the Eighth Judicial Circuit traveled by Abraham Lincoln.

It has donated historical and genealogical research materials to the Lincoln Public Library and the Genealogical & Historical Society.
