The Lincoln College Volleyball team’s four-match winning streak was snapped on Wednesday evening by a three set loss to the nationally ranked Lincoln Land Loggers (#6).

Lincoln looked ready to compete with LLCC in the early going. The Lady Lynx were able to side out effectively by passing well off of serve receive and playing extremely well on defense. Lincoln held a two point lead at 11-10 when sophomore setter Jenna Weller (Salt Fork) went on a four point run of serves to put LC up 15-10. After a Lincoln Land side out, sophomore Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) responded with a kill down the line from the right side and then Hoffert served three points to put Lincoln up 19-11.

LC would maintain their commanding lead up to 21-14, but the Loggers began to chip away by serving aggressively and outlasting Lincoln on several long rallies. Lincoln would see their lead completely disappear as LLCC tied the score at 24-24 and then win it with two quick kills for a final score of 26-24.

LC Coach Mark Tippett was encouraged by his team’s performance, but disappointed by their inability to finish off the set. “We played some outstanding volleyball in set one and absolutely should have won it. We just tightened up at the wrong times and made poor decisions. The loss really zapped out confidence, but the good news is that we are capable of playing right with one of the top teams in the Region.”

The set one collapse was followed by two more Lincoln Land wins by scores of 25-16 and 25-19. In each set, Lincoln (10-5) was competitive early on, but faded during the middle of the sets.

Sophomore setter Abbi Buelow (Rockford) was the LC point leader in the match with seven points served and also lead in set assists with 12. Mattie Giese, a sophomore right side hitter from Highland Park, IL, lead the team in kills with nine, and freshman libero Megan Gilliam (Waterloo) had 12 digs.

The Lady Lynx will try to right the ship this evening as they travel to East Peoria for a 6:00 match at Illinois Central College.
