Jared Donaldson overcame a first-set misstep and posted a 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-5 win over Greek qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday in the opening round of the Chengdu Open in Chengdu, China.

The 58th-ranked American rebounded after losing 10 of 13 points in the final set before handing the 19-year-old Tsitsipas his seventh loss in as many ATP-level matches.

"I think the entire match was very close and Stefanos played a great match," Donaldson said after improving to 19-17 on the year.

"Obviously, at 5-2 in the third set I didn't play a great service game. It happens sometimes. I gave myself an opportunity to win, I just didn't take it and I also thought I got a little unlucky."

The American dismissed Tsitsipas in 2 hours, 25 minutes to set up a match against either sixth-seeded Brit Kyle Edmund or Australian Bernard Tomic.

Fifth-seeded Yuichi Sugita of Japan was leading 6-1 when Croatian qualifier Mate Pavic retired after 22 minutes with a muscular strain.

Sugita advances to challenge Brazil's Thiago Monteiro, a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 winner over 17-year-old Chinese wild card Yibing Wu in two hours.

American qualifier Taylor Fritz lost just four of his first-service points against Chinese wild card Di Wu in a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

"It was a really tight first set, but I handed it well," Fritz said after his 63-minute win. "I'd really like to make it into Milan and I know I'll probably need to win one of these tournaments."

Fritz is currently No. 11 in the Emirates ATP Race To Milan for one of the seven remaining berths at the Next Gen ATP Finals from Nov. 7-11.
