Lady Wolverine teams win Springfield "Back to School Gym Tournament

Over the weekend the 7th and 8th grade Lady Wolverines traveled down to Springfield for the Back to School Gym Tournament. WLB was the only 1A school in the tournament as many of the teams were 3A or 4A. The 7th grade team faced and defeated Pleasant Plains and Decatur Robertson in the two bracket games which put them up against Rockford Eisenhower which is a 4A school up by Chicago and was also undefeated entering the Championship game. The Lady Wolverines took control from the beginning as they came out with a demanding 23-2 first quarter lead. The team went on to win the championship by a score of 49-12. Kloe Froebe led all scorers with 23 points and was selected as the 7th grade MVP player of the tournament.

The Lady Wolverines weren’t finished as it was now the 8th grade teams turn. The 8th grade team defeated Decatur Garfield and Decatur Robertson to advance to the championship game where again the Lady Wolverines would face Rockford Eisenhower. The Lady Wolverines again, came out with much intensity and grabbed a 25-2 first quarter lead. The Lady Wolverines looked like a well oiled machine as they were clicking on offense and defense. The team went on to win the Championship by a score of 52-14.

The Lady Wolverines were back in action at WLB this week as they faced Peoria Limestone Walters. The 7th grade team came out with some dynamic defense and managed to climb to a 23-4 lead after the end of the first quarter. The team didn’t quit there, they played a great inside outside game and ended up being victorious by a score of 54-14. Kloe Froebe led all scorers with 20 points, Jane Turner put in 8, Piper Whiteman with 7,Jenna Bowman and Becca Heizig had 6 a piece, Elly Martinez with 5 and Emma Baker with 2. Froebe and Tori Geriets led on the boards with 5, as Jane Turner and Piper Whiteman grabbed 4. Defensively Kloe Froebe led in steals with 9 and Becca Heitzig swiped 4. With the victory the team now stand as 6-0 on the season.

The 8th grade Lady Wolverines came out read to play as well as they pulled out to a demanding first quarter lead of 34-2. The team has been playing extremely well lately and this night was no different. The team went on to claim a 76-16 victory over Limestone. Kloe Froebe led the offensive attack as she went 16-17 from the field as she finished the night with 45 points. Elly Martinez contributed with 7, Asia Sales 6, Jenna Bowman 6, Tori Schilling 5, Piper Whiteman 4, Becca Heitzig 3 and Tori Geriets with 2. Martinez made some great passes and ended up leading in the assist column with 5. Froebe also led on the boards as teammates, Jenna Bowman, Tori Geriets and Asia Sales pulled down 3 a piece as well. Froebe led the defensive attack with 9 steals, as Asia Sales swiped 5, Heitzig 4, Jazmyn Robbins 3, Bowman and Martinez 2. The 8th grade record now stands at 6-0.

The Lady Wolverines will be back in action Monday night in Heyworth.
