The club announced Monday goalkeeper Sean
Melvin signed a homegrown contract for this season, with options
for each of the next three seasons.
Melvin had been playing with the Whitecaps' USL affiliate in
Fresno, Calif. He spent the two prior seasons with Vancouver's
previous USL team, Whitecaps FC 2.
Homegrown players are those which have been with an MLS club's
youth academy for at least one year and have met the necessary
training and retention requirements. This allows a club to sign
a player to an MLS contract without subjecting that player to
the MLS SuperDraft.
Melvin, 23, has yet to play for Fresno FC this season, but the
Victoria, B.C., native recorded 80 saves, four clean sheets, and
a 1.76 goals-against average in 21 appearances with Whitecaps FC
2.
Vancouver is currently tied for first place in the Western
Conference through five games with a 3-1-1 record and 10 points.
But the Whitecaps have given up seven goals, the same number
they have scored.
They did beat Columbus on Saturday, 2-1. They travel to Salt
Lake next weekend.
