The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers returned to Bob Gasaway Field on Thursday afternoon and a huge crowd turned out to support the home team under a spectacular sunny sky. Logan DeRight took the mound against a very tough Midwest Central team.

The Raiders scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build a 5-0 lead over the Hilltoppers. But the Mount Pulaski boys never gave up and mounted a comeback that surprised the Raiders.

Mount Pulaski squeaked out a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brandon Kretzinger. With the Hilltoppers trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, a fielder's choice by Todd Kelly scored a run. Logan DeRight then knocked in a run on a groundout. Next up hot-hitting Ben Fricke got a hold of one and knocked it out of the ballpark. The solo shot was Fricke's third of the season and second home run this week. The Raiders ended the Hilltoppers hopes on a strikeout but the boys from MP received quite the applause from the crowd on their tremendous comeback effort.

Mount Pulaski Coach Joel Washko was very positive following the tough loss and was proud of the Hilltoppers.

"It was a good ballgame. We fought hard til the last pitch and that's one thing we talk about all the time. Just battling, you know," said Coach Washko. "We had couple tough breaks early in the game and a couple weird bounces that didn't go our way. Logan threw a really nice game. He hung in there and gave us a chance. Todd came in and got out of a very big jam. I mean, we were down 5-1 headed into the seventh inning and he's got bases loaded and nobody out and he gets out of it with nothing. That gave us a chance to be that close. I thought we had good at bats. They are a good team. They had a good kid on the mound. But we put good at bats together and we made him work. Eventually we got him out of the game. Defensively I thought we did some good things. There were some miscues here and there. All in all I thought the best thing was just competing hard until the last pitch. So that's a good experience for us. You'd love to win 'em but we were in a good close ballgame at the end. One play away."

Logan DeRight took the loss for Mount Pulaski. The junior went six innings and allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out three batters and walking three. Sophomore Todd Kelly pitched an inning in relief and he gave up two hits while striking out two batters.

The Mount Pulaski offense continues to impress. Brandon Kretzinger was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Drew Martin and Ben Fricke were each 2-for-4. Martin crushed a triple while it was Fricke getting all of the ball for his third home run of the season. Todd Kelly and Logan DeRight were the other Hilltoppers with hits and RBIs. A solid effort and a tough loss. Wait til next year.
