MLB roundup: Cubs dominate Indians

[April 25, 2018] Kyle Schwarber hit two solo home runs, Ian Happ homered and had three hits and Tyler Chatwood allowed a run and scattered four hits in six-plus innings as the Chicago Cubs rolled past the host Cleveland Indians 10-3 on Tuesday in the teams' first meeting in Cleveland since the epic 2016 World Series.

Chatwood (1-3) struck out five and walked five. Josh Tomlin (0-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Four of the hits he allowed were home runs. Tomlin struck out three and didn't issue a walk.

The Cubs pounded out 15 hits, and Happ and Tommy La Stella joined Schwarber in driving in two runs. All nine batters who started the game for the Cubs had hits.

Cleveland managed nine hits off four Chicago pitchers, with Jose Ramirez and Bradley Zimmer collecting three hits each.

Yankees 8, Twins 3

Didi Gregorius continued his torrid start with a two-run homer among three hits and drove in three runs to give him an major-league-best 27 RBIs as New York beat visiting Minnesota.

Gregorius hit an RBI single in his second at-bat in the third and hit his eighth homer of the season in the fifth off Jose Berrios (2-2). Gary Sanchez recorded his ninth career multi-homer game, and Aaron Judge homered and had three hits as the Yankees won for the seventh time in nine games.

CC Sabathia (1-0) made his second start since returning from a hip injury and allowed an unearned run and two hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out four, walked one, threw 82 pitches and recorded his 20th career victory over the Twins.

Mariners 1, White Sox 0

Marco Gonzales threw six-plus scoreless innings, and Mitch Haniger drove in the game's only run as visiting Seattle topped Chicago.

Gonzales (2-2) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked only one. Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless ninth inning for his ninth save.

Kyle Seager ignited a two-out rally in the fourth inning with a double off Chicago starter Chris Volstad (0-1). Haniger followed with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Seager, who had two of Seattle's five hits.

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 3 (10 innings)

Curtis Granderson homered with one out in the 10th inning, his third hit and third RBI of the game, and Toronto beat visiting Boston.

It was the third homer of the season for Granderson and his fourth career walk-off homer. The blast came against Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel (0-1).

Blue Jays reliever Tyler Clippard (3-0) pitched around a walk in the top of the 10th to earn the win. Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna blew the save in the ninth, allowing Boston to tie the game at 3 on four hits, a walk and two runs.

Reds 9, Braves 7 (12 innings)

Scooter Gennett hit his first two homers of the season, including a walk-off, two-run shot in the 12th inning to give host Cincinnati a win over Atlanta.

Joey Votto walked to open the inning before Gennett's second homer, giving the Reds their second straight win even though they blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning.

Joey Votto also went deep for the Reds. Freddie Freeman homered twice and Kurt Suzuki also hit a home run for Atlanta.

Diamondbacks 8, Phillies 4

Alex Avila had a homer, two singles and two RBIs, and Jarrod Dyson and Daniel Descalso also homered in Arizona's victory at Philadelphia.

Avila and Dyson hit back-to-back homers in the second inning for a 2-0 lead, and Descalso hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run eighth inning as the Diamondbacks (16-6) tied the franchise record for best 22-game start.

Aaron Altherr had a two-run double and Cesar Hernandez had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies. Philadelphia had won four in a row and 11 of 13.

A's 3, Rangers 2

Andrew Triggs pitched six strong innings, and Mark Canha homered to lead surging Oakland to a victory at Texas.

Triggs (2-0) allowed one run on four hits and struck out six with one walk for the A's, who have won four in a row and eight of their past nine.

Adrian Beltre drove in both runs for the Rangers, but he also injured his left hamstring in the eighth inning, leaving him day-to-day.

Angels 8, Astros 7

Andrelton Simmons socked two home runs, and Los Angeles fended off a late rally to win at Houston.

Simmons belted his second homer of the season leading off the second inning against Astros right-hander Charlie Morton, then struck a bigger blow with his two-out, three-run shot off Joe Smith to cap the Angels' four-run seventh. The latter blast provided Los Angeles with an 8-5 lead.

Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani dazzled yet struggled with his command, posting multiple triple-digit fastballs while issuing five walks and yielding four runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Brewers 5, Royals 2

Travis Shaw hit a three-run homer, and visiting Milwaukee posted its seventh consecutive victory by dispatching Kansas City.

Milwaukee's Lorenzo Cain homered against his former teammates and reached base four times on two hits and two walks. Ryan Braun had an RBI single and also collected two hits and two walks for the Brewers, who prevailed in the opener of a nine-game road trip.

Zach Davies (2-2) pitched six innings of two-run ball to win his second straight start. Salvador Perez homered in his season debut for the Royals, who have dropped 11 of their past 13 games.

Mets 6, Cardinals 5 (10 innings)

Jay Bruce had three hits, including a long, tiebreaking solo homer in the top of the 10th inning, as New York came back to win at St. Louis.

The Mets have alternated wins with losses in their last five games. The Cardinals had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell for just the second time in 10 games.

Bruce, who missed the cycle by a double, gave the Mets their first lead with his two-out blast off Matt Bowman (0-1). New York trailed 2-0 and 4-1 -- Bruce laced an RBI triple in the second inning -- before tying the game on Yoenis Cespedes' three-run homer in the fifth inning. Tommy Pham went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Cardinals.

Rockies 8, Padres 0

Kyle Freeland tossed seven innings for his first win of the season, and Colorado blanked visiting San Diego.

Trevor Story hit a grand slam in a five-run second inning to pace the Rockies.

Colorado's big night at the plate spoiled the major league debut of San Diego's Eric Lauer. The left-hander, who had his contract selected earlier Tuesday, surrendered six runs in three-plus innings.

Marlins 3, Dodgers 2

Cameron Maybin delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning as visiting Miami ended its five-game losing streak with a victory at Los Angeles.

Maybin's hit off Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez (0-1) helped the Marlins complete a rally from a one-run deficit in the eighth inning. Drew Steckenrider (1-0) threw a scoreless eighth inning for the victory, and Brad Ziegler pitched the ninth for his second save.

Miami's J.T. Realmuto hit his second home run in six games this season.

Giants 4, Nationals 3

Mac Williamson hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning, and Brandon Belt homered to extend his hitting streak to seven games in San Francisco's victory over visiting Washington.

Williamson's homer was his third in five games since being recalled from the minors Friday. Belt has five homers and seven RBIs during his hitting streak.

Michael Taylor hit a three-run homer and Moises Sierra had two hits for the Nationals, who have lost four in a row and five of six.

Inclement weather forced the postponement of the Tampa Bay game in Baltimore. The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader May 12, to begin at 3:05 p.m. ET, followed by the regularly scheduled game approximately 30 minutes after the opener concludes, the Orioles announced.

Rain prompted the postponement of the game between Detroit and host Pittsburgh. It will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Wednesday. The opener will begin at 4:05 p.m. ET, with the second game beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
