[August 09, 2018]   LINCOLN - A collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and a documentary entitled “The Intrepid, Discovering Lincoln’s Balloon Corps” will be presented at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 11th at the Lincoln College Johnston Center by Terry D. Lowe of Lincoln, Nebraska, who is with the Chief Information Office of that state.

Among items Lowe will be showing is a high resolution copy of the last known official document signed by President Lincoln just before he left for the theater. This large document is the appointment of Alvin Sanders as the Territorial Governor of Nebraska.

In addition Lowe will be showing a rare ambrotype photo taken in Springfield, IL in 1858 which depicts Lincoln as a very young attorney. It is the only known photo of him in an unusual white linen suit. The original photograph on glass was attained through a donation by the granddaughter of the photographer.

The Lincoln collection includes a large display of artifacts which reflect a little known part of Lincoln’s visionary leadership during the Civil War.

Lowe’s great-great-grandfather, Pembroke Charles Summerset Lowe, is the younger brother of Civil War balloonist, Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, who was the Chief Aeronaut of Lincoln’s Civil War Balloon Corps.

Thaddeus was inducted into the U. S. Ballooning Hall of Fame in 2017.

Lowe’s appearance is being sponsored by the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society in cooperation with Lincoln College. Refreshments will be served following the program. The public is invited.
