Junior High Baseball:  WLB drops season opener to Athens

The West Lincoln-Broadwell baseball team opened up their season on the road at Athens Jr. High. The Warriors came away with a 17-7 win in 6 innings.

Seven different Wolverine hurlers took the mound in the game with Michael Lucas picking up the loss.

Trey Schilling started and completed one inning of work giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Jackson Geriets, Camden Nelson, Luke Jones, Brady Miller, and Alex Schmidt all got in an inning or less of work.

Offensively, Schilling led the attack with 3 singles in 4 plate appearances and scored 2 runs. Jacob Langley added 2 hits, an RBI, and a walk. Lucas and Nelson each had a 2-run singles for the Wolverines.

WLB took an early 4-0 lead after their half of the opening frame on 3 consecutive singles by Schilling, Langley, and Lucas. Miller plated the 4th run with a 1-out single to center.

Athens answered in the bottom half with 3 runs on 3 hits. Athens tied the game with 1 run in the 2nd and took a comfortable 10-4 lead with a 6-run 3rd inning.

WLB cut the lead to 3 with a 3-run 4th inning. Jones scored on a wild pitch and Schilling and Langley scored on Nelson's 2-out, 2-run single. WLB had a golden opportunity in the 5th when they loaded the bases with 1 out, but a pair of strike outs ended the rally.

Athens closed the game out with another 6-run 6th inning.
