There is a possibility the Padres will regain his services,
according to a report from mlb.com.
The report said San Diego is making a strong move to acquire Kluber
from the Cleveland Indians. The 32-year-old is being shopped by the
Indians despite the right-hander winning 18 or more games in four of
the past five seasons.
The report listed the group of San Diego players being discussed
including outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and catcher
Austin Hedges.
The two teams are known to have a good relationship, last evident
when the Indians acquired All-Star left-hander Brad Hand and
right-hander Adam Cimber for catching prospect Francisco Mejia prior
to last season's trading deadline.
Despite the emergence of the Padres as a player for Kluber's
services, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain as the favorite to land the
pitcher who went 20-7 with a 2.89 ERA in 33 starts last season.
Kluber, who was drafted by the Padres in 2007, was in Double-A in
2010 when he was sent to the Indians as part of a three-team trade
in which Ryan Ludwick was sent to San Diego.
He has gone 96-55 with a 3.09 ERA in 201 appearances (196 starts) in
seven-plus seasons with Cleveland. Kluber won the Cy Young in 2014
and 2017 and finished third in the voting in 2016 and 2018.
The Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds
also are believed to have interest in Kluber, who is slated to make
$17.2 million in 2019.
