Lady Lynx Go 1-1 in Weekend Games

The Lincoln College Women’s Basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend. On Friday, the #10 ranked Lady Lynx defeated #20 Bryant & Stratton College 80-66. On Saturday, LC came up short in a road match-up against Conference and Region opponent John Wood Community College 69-60.

Against Bryant & Stratton, LC sophomore Erynn Young (Indianapolis) led her team in scoring with 25 points and assists with eight. Young reached an impressive milestone in this game as she became the first player in program history to reach the 1000 points scored total for her career.

Two other Lynx to score an even 20 points in the contest were Chicago natives Allysha Boothe and Nautica Preston.

Lincoln Coach Matt Vavro liked the energy his team brought to the floor. “We really came out strong and played great team defense. We shared the ball well and had 18 assists compared to their 3,” said Vavro. “They made a big run on us late which is what good teams do,” he added, “ but we made enough plays down the stretch to hold on.”

The Lady Lynx had a rougher time of it on Saturday at John Wood. LC turned the ball over frequently in the first half and fell behind early. After trailing 19-6 at the end of the first quarter, Lincoln was only cut the lead to 11 at halftime (31-20). A big third quarter got LC back in it, but in the end the team fell short and settled for a 9-point loss. The setback drops the team’s overall record to 22-2 and 5-1 in Conference play.

Nautica Preston led LC in scoring in this game with 16 points. Three other Lady Lynx scored in double digits with 11 points apiece. Freshman Kaleia Monteiro (Rockford) was dominant on the boards, grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds. Monteiro was one of the LC players to score 11 points giving her a double-double for the game.

Despite the outcome, Coach Vavro was satisfied with the effort he saw. “The girls didn’t quit and dug deep as we managed to fight back and grab a two-point lead with five minutes to go, but ultimately came up short. Hopefully this will be a learning experience moving forward. No game in the MWAC is going to be easy, especially on the road. Every game is a dogfight.”

LC is off until Saturday when they will host Parkland at 1:00 PM.
