[January 04, 2018]    The San Francisco Giants' hunt for outfield power is prompting trade talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates about Andrew McCutchen, MLB.com reported early Thursday.

McCutchen is due to make $14.75 million in 2018 after the Pirates picked up his option in early November. He will be a free agent after the upcoming season.

The MLB.com report indicated that the Giants are reluctant to part with highly regarded prospects, as their December deal to acquire third baseman Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays costed then young infielder Christian Arroyo.

McCutchen is a possible fallback option for San Francisco after a deal with the Miami Marlins to acquire right fielder Giancarlo Stanton was vetoed by the slugger. McCutchen does not have a no-trade clause in his contract.

Last season, McCutchen belted 28 homers, a total he topped only once in his career, when he hit 31 in 2012, the year he captured the National League's Most Valuable Player Award.

The 31-year-old veteran is a five-time All-Star and a four-time Silver Slugger winner. He also won a Gold Glove in 2012.

McCutchen posted a .256 batting average in 2016 and a .279 mark in 2017, well off his career average of .291, but he still has averaged 25 homers and 85.9 RBIs over the past seven years.

Last season, Denard Span was the Giants' center fielder and leadoff man, but he went to the Rays as part of the Longoria deal.
