NHL roundup: Blues end Knights' 8-game win streak

[January 05, 2018] Paul Stastny's tiebreaking goal just under six minutes into the third period Thursday night snapped a tie and lifted the Blues past the Golden Knights 2-1 in St. Louis, ending Vegas' eight-game winning streak.

Stastny found the puck at the left post during a scramble around goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and poked it across the goal line before Fleury could find it. It was the eighth goal for Stastny this season and helped St. Louis up its record to 26-15-2.

It was the first regulation loss for the Golden Knights since a 7-4 setback Dec. 1 in Winnipeg.

St. Louis' Alexander Steen scored in the first period, and Vegas' Erik Haula tied the game in the second period.

Wild 6, Sabres 2

Nino Niederreiter needed just over one period to post his first hat trick of the season, and Minnesota rolled to a victory over Buffalo in Saint Paul, Minn.

Niederreiter was back with the team after missing the previous five games due to an ankle injury. Mikko Koivu added a goal and two assists, and Daniel Winnik and Charlie Coyle scored the Wild's other goals.

Sam Reinhart and Evander Kane scored for Buffalo in the third period after Minnesota built a 6-0 lead.

Oilers 2, Ducks 1 (SO)

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the decisive shootout goal as Edmonton edged visiting Anaheim.

Kris Russell scored in regulation for the Oilers, who posted their second consecutive win. Ryan Kesler tallied for the Ducks, who saw their three-game winning streak end.

Edmonton goaltender Cam Talbot and Anaheim counterpart John Gibson were both credited with 33 saves, and they each faced 34 shots.

Coyotes 3, Predators 2 (OT)

Christian Fischer's goal 2:19 into overtime capped a late comeback that gave Arizona a win over Nashville in Glendale, Ariz.

Fischer's 11th goal of the season came off a pass from Jacob Chychrun. While the Coyotes celebrated just their third win in 13 games, Nashville fell to 2-4-2 over its past eight games.

Arizona forced overtime when Nick Cousins poked a rebound past Juuse Saros at 17:11 of the third period, one second before the end of a power play.

Stars 4, Devils 3

Dallas scored three unanswered goals in the second period and held on for a win over the New Jersey.

Alexander Radulov, Brett Ritchie and Tyler Seguin scored within a 12-minute span for the Stars, who recorded their third win in four games (3-1-0).

After New Jersey's Taylor Hall cut the deficit to 3-2 in the last minute of the second period, Mattias Janmark scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 9:43 into the third. The Devils' Brian Boyle opened the scoring in the first period.

Canadiens 2, Lightning 1 (SO)

Paul Byron scored in a shootout as Montreal snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over visiting Tampa Bay.

Byron opened the shootout with the only goal of the session. Goalie Carey Price stopped all three Lightning shots he faced to preserve the victory. Price recorded 44 saves in regulation and overtime.

Max Pacioretty scored in the second period for the Canadiens, who scored two goals or fewer for the sixth consecutive game. Nikita Kucherov scored in the second period for the Lightning, who lost for just the third time in 15 games (12-3-0) since Dec. 1.

Maple Leafs 3, Sharks 2 (SO)

Tyler Bozak scored in the sixth round of a shootout, giving Toronto a victory over visiting San Jose.

After Bozak scored, Chris Tierney tried to extend the shootout for the Sharks, but his shot banged off the post, allowing Toronto to stop its three-game losing streak.

The game featured a fight two seconds after the opening whistle in which the Maple Leafs' Nazem Kadri pulled off a section of the beard of the Sharks' Joe Thornton. Auston Matthews and Kadri scored in regulation for Toronto, and Brenden Dillon and Tierney replied for San Jose.

Flyers 6, Islanders 4

Ivan Provorov scored two goals, and Philadelphia defeated visiting New York.

Sean Couturier, Michael Raffl, Wayne Simmonds and Travis Konecny also scored for the Flyers. It was a huge response following a disappointing 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, which was Philadelphia's fourth loss in five games.

Cal Clutterbuck scored a pair of goals while John Tavares and Ryan Pulock added a goal each for the Islanders. New York, which gave up three goals in the third period in its previous last loss to the Boston Bruins, has dropped four games in a row.

Hurricanes 4, Penguins 0

Jeff Skinner's unassisted goal in the second period snapped a scoreless tie, and Carolina bounced back from consecutive one-goal losses with a blanking of the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Skinner took the puck away and potted his 13th marker of the season at 6:50 for the only goal the Hurricanes required. It was the fifth win in seven games for Carolina, which got 21 saves from Cam Ward.

Teuvo Teravainen made it 2-0 in the third period before Sebastian Aho sealed the result with a pair of goals.

Avalanche 2, Blue Jackets 0

Mikko Rantanen's wrister beat Sergei Bobrovsky for the decisive goal in the second period as Colorado beat Columbus in Denver for its fourth consecutive win.

Matt Nieto scored his seventh goal of the season for the Avalanche, who have outscored their opponents 15-6 during the winning streak.

Jonathan Bernier anchored the Avalanche with his second shutout of the year, making 34 saves.

Flames 4, Kings 3

Micheal Ferland and Sean Monahan both scored once and assisted each other's goal amid a dominating second period to lead Calgary past visiting Los Angeles.

Ferland, with his career-high 16th goal of the season, Troy Brouwer, Mark Jankowski and Monahan all beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick in the middle frame, after which the hosts received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Tanner Pearson scored twice for the Kings, who also got a goal from Derek Forbort.
